Wisconsin’s Northern Highland Fishery Research Area (NHFRA) is looking for walleye anglers to help contribute to data collection for a project studying the effects of predetermined harvest pressures on a previously unexploited walleye population. The season opener for this effort will be Saturday, June 8.

Michigan DNR euthanizes Atlantic salmon infected with bacterial kidney disease

The Michigan Department of Natural Resources announced today that fisheries staff had to euthanize just over 31,000 Atlantic salmon that were sick with bacterial kidney disease, or BKD.
In early April, routine prestocking inspection of fish being reared at the Harrietta State Fish Hatchery, in Wexford County, found bacterial kidney disease was present. Staff at the Michigan State University Aquatic Animal Health Lab noted signs of active disease and confirmed the presence of Renibacterium salmoninarum, the bacterium that causes BKD.

H2Ohio building wetland barrier in Sandusky Bay

As part of Gov. Mike DeWine’s H2Ohio initiative, the Ohio DNR (ODNR) Division of Wildlife and The Nature Conservancy (TNC) began construction of a unique barrier wetland in Sandusky Bay. The project site is located just offshore of Pickerel Creek Wildlife Area in Sandusky County.
Sandusky Bay is a protected embayment between the mouth of the Sandusky River and Lake Erie. It is a prominent tributary to Lake Erie and a valuable resource for recreational and commercial activities.

Ohio’s 2024 sandhill count 15% higher than in 2023

Volunteer observers reported 412 sandhill cranes during the fourth annual Midwest Crane Count on Saturday, April 13, according to the Ohio DNR (ODNR) Division of Wildlife. The count was coordinated by the Division of Wildlife, International Crane Foundation, and Ohio Bird Conservation Initiative.
During last year’s count, volunteers observed 357 cranes. The 2024 results show a 15% increase in sightings from 2023, likely because of a growing breeding population of sandhill cranes, as well as greater survey effort.

Shooting sports athletes coming to Cedar Falls June 3-9 for Iowa’s largest trap shoot

Nearly 3,100 Iowa shooting sports athletes from grade school through high school will shoot 780,000 targets during the 2024 Iowa Scholastic Clay Target Program (SCTP) Trap Championships, which will take place June 3-9 in Cedar Falls.
The Scholastic Clay Target Program has seen consistent growth in Iowa and across the nation, with increases in participation seen in Iowa middle school and high school teams, which have grown from 1,400 athletes to over 4,500 athletes since 2011. The state shoot in Cedar Falls has added an extra day this year to accommodate the growth.

Whitetail fawning season means deer are on the move, public reminded to leave fawns alone

Fawning season in Iowa and most states in the Midwest traditionally begins during the last week of May, and peaks in the first couple of weeks of June before gradually tapering off. The Iowa DNR reminds the public that with fawning season comes deer are on the move.
Does are secretive about the birthing process and will venture out from normal use areas looking for a secluded spot to deliver this year’s crop of fawns in peace, said Jim Coffey, forest wildlife research biologist with the Iowa Department of Natural Resources (DNR). “This seclusion process is a driving force in protection for the lanky, wavering fawn. Fawns will be left alone while the doe returns only to nurse. This is normal deer behavior,” he said.
