As part of Gov. Mike DeWine’s H2Ohio Initiative, the Ohio DNR (ODNR) was joined by the Columbus and Franklin County Metro Parks to celebrate the completion of the Walnut Creek Treatment Wetland Restoration, the first H2Ohio project in Franklin County.
“The creation of more effective wetlands across the state is a key way to improve water quality for everyone in Ohio,” Gov. DeWine said. “I’m excited to see H2Ohio’s work spread into Franklin County and look forward to hearing more success stories in the future.”

The Ohio DNR (ODNR) Division of Wildlife and Ohio State University are partnering to conduct a multiyear study on the survival and nest success of female wild turkeys.
Ohio’s wild turkey abundance is thought to have peaked around 2001 and has fluctuated since then. Adult hen survival, nest success rates, and poult survival play a role in population levels. From 2017 to 2019, below-average hatches of turkey poults resulted in a decrease in wild turkey abundance. Hatches in 2021 and 2022 were above average.

The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources announced Thursday that it received a 2,529-acre land donation from Trust for Public Land. The donated land, roughly four-square miles of rolling hills of forests, lakes, ponds and wetlands near Park Rapids, will be managed by the Minnesota DNR as part of Paul Bunyan State Forest. The parcel currently includes a portion of the Scout Trail, a pre-existing Grant-in-Aid snowmobile trail, and will eventually offer many other recreation opportunities.
West Fork Wildlife Area in Palo Alto County, Iowa, was developed after the historic flood of 1993, then expanded after the floods of 2018 and 2019 as landowners exited the floodplain.
Flooding disturbed the land to the point where it could no longer be farmed successfully, and the Natural Resources Conservation Service partnered with the Iowa Department of Natural Resources (DNR) and Palo Alto County Conservation Board to enroll much of the impacted ground into the federal Emergency Watershed Protection program.

An individual suspected of trafficking red-eared slider turtles in Cincinnati and striking a state wildlife officer with his vehicle was recently indicted in Hamilton County by a grand jury, according to the Ohio DNR (ODNR) Division of Wildlife.
In July, state wildlife officer Brad Turner, assigned to Preble County, received a Turn-In-a-Poacher (TIP) report regarding turtles being sold in Cincinnati. Officer Turner and state wildlife officer Andrew Dowdell, assigned to Butler County, responded to the location. They found two men selling red-eared sliders without the required propagation permit.
That narrow access lane off a dead-end road is the only way in and out of the Winford Wildlife Area, a 637-acre floodplain grassland, just north of Oskaloosa, Iowa.
The public wildlife area was created after the Skunk River blew out a levee in 2008 and flooded adjacent crop fields. These fields had been farmed since the early 1900s, but the levee giving out was the final straw. Farmers working the sandy, silty soils decided it was time to get rid of the headache and enroll this land into the Wetland Reserve Program.

The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (DNR) announced on Thursday that it will host two open houses for the public to learn about the revised draft of the 2023 Wolf Management Plan.
These open houses will take place at Northwood Technical College in Ashland, Wis., on Oct. 2 and at UW-Stevens Point – in Marshfield, Wis., on Oct. 3. Both events will take place from 5-7 p.m. Attendees may come and go throughout these events.
