Hunters reading the New York 2025-26 Hunting & Trapping Regulations Guide made an interesting discovery that had not been in previously printed editions of DEC’s annual publication.
On pages 18 and 19 it says it is unlawful to leave personal property, including trail cameras stored on state lands. This is mentioned under both State Forests and Wildlife Management Areas. As for the Adirondack and Catskill State Forest Preserves, the guide states that all state land rules and regulations apply to these public land tracts as well.

New York’s Region 5 landowners missing out on DMAP permits

For several years John Dixson – a farmer, landowner and hunter in New York’s Southern Washington County – has utilized the state’s Deer Management Assistance Program to help keep white-tailed deer populations in check on his farmlands in Easton.
Dixson, however, said he was caught off guard this year as his DMAP applications were denied and it was suggested that he rather enter the state’s Deer Damage Permit (DDP) program, also known as “nuisance” permits.

Youth hunting weekend whitetail take up 20% in New York

Perhaps it’s the new e-tag reporting system or another factor? Either way, the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation said that reported whitetail harvests from the three-day youth hunting weekend, which took place Oct. 11-13, saw a 20% increase over 2024.
“Likely this reflects a combination of factors, including a minor increase in the number of eligible youth hunters, and possibly an increase in (the) number of deer taken and rate at which youth hunters reported.”

Wait is almost over as New York’s Southern Zone deer hunting opens Nov. 15

Deer hunting season in New York reaches its zenith when the Southern Zone regular season begins Saturday, Nov. 15. It is the state’s busiest hunting day of the year, and busiest hunting weekend overall.
With the opener comes a series of changes for hunters this season. Most notably, the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation’s conversion to E-tags. No longer do big game (deer, bear) and turkey hunters need to attach a paper tag to the carcass as long as they remain in possession of it in their residence or vehicle.

Youth hunters kick things off as hunting, trapping seasons highlight fall’s progression in New York

Hunters across New York continue to have a multitude of opportunities for both big and small game, and as October morphs into November that will only accelerate. Trapping seasons, too, are just getting under way in parts of the state.
Following the state’s annual youth hunting weekend, which took place Oct. 11-13, deer season intensified in the Northern Zone as the early muzzleloading season is taking place Oct. 18-24, followed on Oct. 25 by the Northern Zone regular season opener, which runs through Dec. 7.
