Five rules for staying safe during cold-water wading

If you’re considering taking part in some of the best stream fishing of the year, then you’re going to want to pay attention to all of the safety details that come with it.
Many anglers don’t put away their fishing gear just because the water has gotten cold, but while dressing warmer and paying more attention to the conditions can go a long way towards salvaging an otherwise cold fishing season, staying safe in the water once the temperatures drop requires a little bit of extra preparation.

Elusive fishers make a strong recovery in New York

The fisher may be a diminutive predator, but don’t let the size fool you.
Even with a fairly elaborate trail camera setup around my area of upstate New York, I never get tired of following all the deer, turkeys, and other game animals that make their way past the motion-sensitive lenses. I always get a little excited when a new animal is captured, especially black bears now that I live in Ulster County. That excitement was immediately multiplied when I began to come across clips of the predatory fisher, one of the region’s most interesting and elusive inhabitants.

Fishing New York’s Hudson River for striped bass? Here’s what to consider if using a guide

What are the factors that make a Hudson River striped bass guide good?
Once you’ve made the easy choice to do some striped bass fishing on the venerable Hudson River, you may want to consider going with a good guide to get you on the fish. Preparation is half the fun when it comes to New York’s April 1 trout opener

Little gets us trout anglers revved up quite like the opening of trout season in New York.
If I stopped to list all of the trout streams, creeks, rivers, and lakes I’ve fished in New York State I’d use up my word count in the first paragraph. Suffice it to say that the spring trout season is one of my favorites, and with thanks to our venerable NYS Department of Environmental Conservation, we’re all lucky enough to be able to enjoy it year-round in many areas now.

How do full moons get their names?

Nothing gets in our outdoor-loving hearts and minds like the sight of a full moon coming out and drifting across the horizon. In truth, any full moon – winter, spring, summer – or fall gets our complete attention and has even made many good folks sign up for the local photography class.
The indigenous Native American peoples were so connected to the earth and sky that they created some of the most fabled names for places that are now indelibly burned into our collective memories.

What hunters and wildlife officials are saying about EHD in southeastern New York’s deer herd

As an avid outdoorsman, I learned three things right away when I moved to Ulster County, N.Y.: there are ticks on seemingly every blade of tall grass, there is a thriving population of black bears, and the deer herd is afflicted with Epizootic Hemorrhagic Disease, or EHD.
I’ve been deer hunting for many years, and in many areas of New York State, and I can testify to the fact that the whitetails in different regions of the state – while the same species – are diverse in their lifestyle, and to some extent, their appearance.
