Christine Thomas: Close encounters of the bird kind at little cabin

I am writing from the she-shed on the second morning of the 2023 deer season. The sun is well up and reflecting off a universe of frost crystals blanketing the newly picked cornfield in front of me. A tiny fawn has been out front for the past hour, trying to vacuum up enough harvest waste to be strong enough to evade the coyotes this winter. She was joined briefly by a cute 6-point buck, about an hour ago. No deer have been taken at the little cabin, so far.

Christine Thomas: Farmer Dan grows a little John Deere green

“Don’t waste your money,” was the advice of an old friend (you know who you are) who has spent decades in the agribusiness field in central Wisconsin. “I am not putting any in this year.”
I had taken up a seat next to him at the bar in Two Lakes Supper Club, in Almond, Wis. The gentleman in question is a fan of my columns. We were discussing food plots. He said he was not putting them in on his land this year, due to the dry weather. It has been very dry here. We have sandy soil. I often say we are never more than three days from a drought.

Not-so-easy little cabin pinecone caper

Not that I needed more projects. Early September is a busy time at the little cabin. There is firewood to split, haul, and stack. Cover crops in the edges of our ag fields need to be planted. Deer stands need readying. Water tanks need constant attention due to the seemingly endless thirst of deer in the fall. Trail cameras need checking. Deer rifles need sighting in. The fall conservation meeting travel schedule is looming. The cabin itself needs a good fall cleaning. Dean Bortz waits for a column every two weeks. Why, oh why, then, did I latch onto the press release that came into my email from the Department of Natural Resources on Friday? I must be a glutton for punishment.

Furry thieves maraud Christine Thomas’ walnut crop

“They are all gone,” I said in agitation, as my husband, Stan, looked up in confusion.
“Every one of my 15 walnuts has disappeared. They were not even ripe. There is the largest crop of acorns I have ever seen. The crab apple trees are loaded. The cherry trees are virtually dripping with fruit. There are 26 acres of dry-land corn at the dent stage. The wild grape crop is perfectly ripe. The cabin yard, full of bird feeders, is only 100 yards away. Why? Why did they need to take 15 unripe walnuts?”

Summer of kayaks: going to the dogs

ou know how you can get something in your head? You have a vision for how you want things to go.
You fantasize about a perfect situation. In your mind’s eye you play a movie where every detail unfolds exactly as it must for you to be absolutely delighted with the outcome. This is a recipe for relationship disaster. Particularly if the perfect vision involves Airedales.

Christine Thomas: First launch of new pedal kayaks is a memorable experience

“The trailer tires are low on pressure, and we do not have an air compressor. You can run to Fleet Farm and air them up on your way out.”
I do not remember whether it was Kendal Kolpien or Mike Boldt, at Schmidt Boat Lifts and Docks, who said this to my daughter, Shannon Honl, and me as we were picking up the three kayaks and two trailers that we purchased from them in mid-March. The reason that I do not remember who said what is because my mind began to reel with panic as these words were uttered.
