Christine Thomas: Little cabin greens deck the halls in Plover, Wis.

“I would really like to get the boughs and tree for the deck before the weather turns on us,” I told my husband Stan as we headed into the weekend before Wisconsin’s deer season.
Weather-wise, it had been a glorious fall. We had been well into October before we needed to clear the flowerpots off the deck, and then only because the flowers were shutting down. Frost had nothing to do with it. This was about to change.

Christine Thomas: A 2024 Wisconsin deer season report from the little cabin

“If either of them comes down to the south end of the field, he is chili,” I texted to Dave Clausen and Duke Welter, friends with whom I served on the Wisconsin Natural Resources Board in the early 2000s.
It was opening morning of the Wisconsin gun deer season. The three of us generally share text messages about opening morning conditions in our parts of the state during deer season and turkey season.

Christine Thomas: Counting down to a ‘clean’ deer season in Wisconsin

“Dan wants me to help clean out our deer stands,” Shannon shared, as we talked about plans for their visit on the Veterans Day weekend.
Those of you who have permanent stands are wrinkling up your noses and shaking your heads in sympathy with Shannon. It is a dirty job. But somebody needs to do it. That somebody has usually been me.

Christine Thomas: Wisconsin’s Ken Kranz passes along deer hunting torch

Ken and I were of a similar vintage, so I knew he was past old enough. In the beginning, he would talk about how they needed him at his place of employment. Sometimes he mentioned projects on his farm that he planned to cover with the extra cash. In the end, he would smile his captivating smile and shake his head.

Christine Thomas: The story from a highly-anticipated antelope hunt

My husband, Stan, and I left Plover, Wis., early on the morning of Sept. 16, headed for Cody, Wyo. Readers will recall that we drew rare nonresident antelope tags.
We were to be hosted by friends, John Schreiner, Tom Dew, and Jim Zumbo. John and Tom are friends from my involvement in the Boone and Crockett Club. Jim Zumbo, a famous outdoors writer and wild game chef, served on the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation Board with me.

Christine Thomas: Gotta love a great Airedale hunting story

In honor of National Dog Day, my friend, outdoor writer Jim Zumbo, challenged his Facebook friends to post their favorite stories about a canine companion making a spectacular game bird retrieve. I thought that would be a great idea for column.
I do not know anyone who owns a bird dog who does not like to tell stories about the amazing things their dogs have done. I am no exception.

Christine Thomas: What does David Holmes really know about homemade turkey soup anyway?

“Wild turkey does not taste all that great, anyway,” opined our friend, David Holmes.
My husband, Stan Thomas, sponsors a trap team at the Hancock Sportsmans Club in Hancock. The team, the Adams County Outlaws, consists of friends and neighbors from the days when we lived and farmed there. We were at the club celebrating the end of the summer trap league. Three of the team members are the three Holmes brothers, David, Louis, and Gary. David’s remark was the latest in a volley between he and brother Louis over David’s apparent propensity to shoot jakes.
