Christine Thomas: Part 2 of recapping the aftermath of Hurricane Ian from Captiva, Florida

I have listened to the audio version of almost all the Doc Ford novels. The protagonist is the main character in a host of colorful characters that have populated 27 novels about an American operative who works for a government agency that “doesn’t exist,” in the guise of a marine biologist whose lab is on Sanibel Island.

Christine Thomas: Recapping the aftermath of Hurricane Ian from Captiva, Florida

I know from the nice notes I get that some of my readers enjoy the little cabin crew Florida adventures when I write about them. Many have experienced the area at some time in their lives and appreciate the references to places they have been.
I did not write about Florida in the year of the aftermath of Hurricane Ian. This story is hard for me to tell.

Christine Thomas: Plenty to see, and photograph, at Ding Darling National Wildlife Refuge

“What do you hope to see at Ding Darling National Wildlife Refuge this week?” my daughter, Shannon, asked. “I am hoping to see wood storks.”
“Spoonbills,” I chimed in.
“Gators,” my husband, Stan said, predictably. Never mind that we had only ever seen one alligator in our many years of going.

Christine Thomas: Thrill of victory, agony of defeat

“I think duct tape could solve all your problems,” my husband, Stan, offered helpfully (not).
This sage advice was given as we were on our way to Sheboygan Falls to the Oh Rats Dog Training Center to participate in our first barn hunt trial. Readers will remember that my last column focused on introducing my Airedale, Major, and daughter, Shannon Honl’s Airedale, Vesper, to the game of barn hunt. Dogs can win pretty ribbons for finding rats in PVC tubes that are buried in straw. Collecting three pretty ribbons result in a RATN (rat novice) title for your dog.

Christine Thomas: My Airedale, Major, meets ‘the rats’: Part 1

“I am headed over to the Oh Rats Training Center in Sheboygan Falls on Dec. 30 for barn hunt training,” my friend, Sue Zimmer, shared on a winter solstice call. “I invited some of our other Airedale friends to throw in. Would you want to bring Major over?
A little background here is necessary. You met Sue Zimmer in a previous column when my Airedale, Major, introduced her Airedales, Chipper and Buckwheat, to pheasant hunting. The Oh Rats Dog Training Center is co-owned by another dog show friend, Sue Kendall, and Bernadette Zimick-Stahlkopf. They host many kinds of dog training and offer “barn hunt” trials at their facility.

Christine Thomas: Remembering the perseverance of Wisconsin conservationist Roy Sebald

“I could bet you that I can set a trap for a coyote and predict which foot I can catch him by,” challenged Roy Sebald with a twinkle in his eye. “I have won that bet many times.”
I met Roy Sebald for the first time in January 1990. I did not know it at the time, but Roy, at 70 years old, was a world class conservationist in the style of the many Wisconsin conservation greats.

Christine Thomas: Dark days at little cabin turn bright

“Something is wrong with Major,” Stan warned.
This set off alarm bells. Stan, my husband, was right. He had just fed him supper, which our Airedale, Major, normally teases for. Instead, he just laid on the kitchen floor, staring off into space. This was the Monday after deer season. Major and I had spent the afternoon running errands.

Christine Thomas: Little cabin greens deck the halls in Plover, Wis.

“I would really like to get the boughs and tree for the deck before the weather turns on us,” I told my husband Stan as we headed into the weekend before Wisconsin’s deer season.
Weather-wise, it had been a glorious fall. We had been well into October before we needed to clear the flowerpots off the deck, and then only because the flowers were shutting down. Frost had nothing to do with it. This was about to change.
