Summer of kayaks: going to the dogs

ou know how you can get something in your head? You have a vision for how you want things to go.
You fantasize about a perfect situation. In your mind’s eye you play a movie where every detail unfolds exactly as it must for you to be absolutely delighted with the outcome. This is a recipe for relationship disaster. Particularly if the perfect vision involves Airedales.

Christine Thomas: First launch of new pedal kayaks is a memorable experience

“The trailer tires are low on pressure, and we do not have an air compressor. You can run to Fleet Farm and air them up on your way out.”
I do not remember whether it was Kendal Kolpien or Mike Boldt, at Schmidt Boat Lifts and Docks, who said this to my daughter, Shannon Honl, and me as we were picking up the three kayaks and two trailers that we purchased from them in mid-March. The reason that I do not remember who said what is because my mind began to reel with panic as these words were uttered.

Forever remembering former Wisconsin Natural Resources Board member Jane Wiley

Jane Wiley called me in the summer of 2004 and asked to have lunch. It must have been late July, as I had just flown home from Edmonton, Alberta, with my latest Airedale puppy, Nightsun Beau Soleil (Sunny). The journals of the Wisconsin Legislature show that Jane had just been appointed to the Natural Resources Board (NRB), by Gov. Jim Doyle. I had taken my seat on the board in April. She just wanted to meet, get to know each other, and discuss the confirmation process.

Christine Thomas: A trip down memory lane from the turkey woods

I am writing this from my turkey stand at the little cabin, opening day of Season B in Wisconsin. The toms gobbled early. However, only hens have come into my decoys. There is one milling around them right now. Turkey hunting has me thinking about an invitation I received earlier this year that allowed me to revisit the spot where I harvested my first turkey.

Exploring Manitowoc County’s Collins Marsh in Wisconsin

“What kind of swans do we have?” I asked of a woman who was scanning Collins Marsh with her binoculars.
I have no idea what prompted me to go up to a total stranger and ask this question. I was attending the Northeast Wisconsin Dog Show Classic in Manitowoc in support of my friend, Janice Wavra, who was there showing her wire fox terrier, Snooty. I took my Airedale, Major, along for the ride.
