Christine Thomas: It’s been a weird winter at the little cabin

It was another balmy winter day in central Wisconsin. After lunch, I loaded up my Airedale, Major, in the Jeep and headed out to enjoy some sunshine at the little cabin.
My plan was to start a fire in the woodstove to get the cabin warmed up a bit. There are some rotting log issues, and a contractor was coming to look at the project the next day. More on that in a future column.

Christine Thomas: Remembering Tom Heberlein, a giant in natural resources research

“He was the guy I was most afraid of, but he turned out to be my champion,” I said to Pat Durkin the night I called him to reminisce about Tom Heberlein.
I had just heard that he had passed away. I knew Tom and Pat were friends and hunting buddies. I needed to talk. I did not know who else to call. Pat quoted me in his recent tribute to Tom. I thought that quote could use a bit of explanation. It also gave me an opening to provide my own tribute.

Christine Thomas: The black walnut saga continues

“I picked up some black walnuts for you a couple of days ago,” shared my friend, Sue Zimmer. “However, I tried to peel the husks and they were infested with worms. They were so gross that I threw them away. Yuck!”
You met Sue last year when I wrote about taking her two Airedales, Chipper and Buckwheat, pheasant hunting. That article is on my website, www.christinethomasoutdoors.com, if you missed it.

Christine Thomas: A great 2023 deer season is a wrap

For reasons that I do not know, and that do not matter to this narrative, my husband, Stan, had arranged to meet a client at the Arnott Milling Company in Arnott. I was waiting in the Suburban, undoubtedly scanning my iPad, when I was startled by a guy who was motioning for me to roll down my window. Arnott seems like a pretty safe place, so I did.
“Did anyone shoot Indy?” he asked.

Christine Thomas: Close encounters of the bird kind at little cabin

I am writing from the she-shed on the second morning of the 2023 deer season. The sun is well up and reflecting off a universe of frost crystals blanketing the newly picked cornfield in front of me. A tiny fawn has been out front for the past hour, trying to vacuum up enough harvest waste to be strong enough to evade the coyotes this winter. She was joined briefly by a cute 6-point buck, about an hour ago. No deer have been taken at the little cabin, so far.

Christine Thomas: Farmer Dan grows a little John Deere green

“Don’t waste your money,” was the advice of an old friend (you know who you are) who has spent decades in the agribusiness field in central Wisconsin. “I am not putting any in this year.”
I had taken up a seat next to him at the bar in Two Lakes Supper Club, in Almond, Wis. The gentleman in question is a fan of my columns. We were discussing food plots. He said he was not putting them in on his land this year, due to the dry weather. It has been very dry here. We have sandy soil. I often say we are never more than three days from a drought.
