Christine Thomas: Bobcats thrive in Wisconsin’s Driftless Region; and at the little cabin

“Christine, I am looking for blurbs for my book. I know you have things to do, but if it works out …” messaged Al Cornell, a retired Wisconsin DNR wildlife technician, author, photographer, and one of my Facebook friends.
He lives in the Driftless Region of Wisconsin on the family farm. Last year he published an amazing book called A Year at a Beaver Pond: Observations from One Little Dynamic Ecosystem. I was honored that he asked me to do a “blurb” for the back cover of his new book, Bobcats Return to the Driftless Area: Including a Pictorial Chronology of a Mother and Kittens.

Christine Thomas: Kayak, camera and loons offer adventure on Wisconsin’s Spider Lake

“HO HO HO!” texted Tom Dew.
“Merry Christmas,” I texted back.
In mid-July we headed to Hayward, Wis., for our annual visit at the Dew Drop Inn. Tom and Kris Dew have been in this column on several occasions. We met through the Boone and Crockett Club and have gone on to collaborate on several conservation projects over the years.

Christine Thomas: Hawk hubbub at the little cabin

It took me a few hours to focus on the ruckus going on in the woodlot east of the little cabin. It was the Fourth of July. The day was hot, so we planned to spend a few hours out at the little cabin doing chores, taking a Ranger ride, and picking up trail camera chips to share antler development over our Deer Report text message group.

Christine Thomas: Major steps up, captures barn hunt title

This is issue No. 14 of the 2025 edition of Wisconsin Outdoor News. In issue No. 3, I introduced my readers to the dog sport of Barn Hunt when Major, and many Airedale friends, did barn hunt training at the Oh Rats Dog Training Center in Sheboygan.
Barn Hunt is a sport where the objective is to find rats that are hidden safely in PVC pipe tubes, and buried in straw. The dog must find the rat or rats, navigate tunnels in the straw, and climb on bales. The time is limited.

Christine Thomas: Bears wreak some havoc at the Little Cabin

“Feeders have been taken down by bear(s) in a subdivision about a mile southeast of you for the past two weeks,” our town chairman posted on my Facebook page.
He was responding to the trail camera photos of a bear I shared with my friends. I also posted evidence that the trail camera bear visited the little cabin yard, wreaking havoc with our various bird feeders. Husband, Stan, and I had pulled into the cabin yard on a Saturday afternoon in early May.

Christine Thomas: Is Mr. Hollywood that smart, or just lucky?

When I last left my dear readers, I had guided my youth turkey hunter, hunted solo during Season A, and hosted my friends, Charmaine Wargolet and Elaine Kalmbacher, in seasons B and C, respectively, in Wisconsin. My gobbler-in-the-bag count was exactly zero after dozens of 0-dark-30 mornings. Turkey sightings were way north of 100.
Readers will recall that Charmaine and I met a monster tom that I tragically scared away from Charmaine’s trusty Beretta 12-gauge. Charmaine dubbed him “Mr. Hollywood.”

Christine Thomas: Turkeys trot at the little cabin, but Mr. Hollywood lives on for now

“Let me know if you see Mr. Hollywood,” texted Charmaine Wargolet. “It would be nice if Elaine got him.”
Charmaine is heavily involved in the Wisconsin Chapter of Safari Club International. We have done many good things together for conservation over our 35-year friendship. She was referring to a monster turkey that we saw during her annual turkey hunting pilgrimage to the little cabin.

Christine Thomas: Firing up the smoker at the little cabin

“With Laurie Ross’s rub, the flavor will be amazing. My desired internal temperature is above 190 (degrees) for brisket. There is a lot of collagen in brisket that does not break down at lower temps. The last brisket I made took 18 hours. So much time invested,” advised Larry Bonde.
Bonde is my “go-to” guy for all things meat.
