Civilian Marksmanship Program traces its history to 1903, Roosevelt

In 1903, President Theodore Roosevelt suggested that this country should encourage rifle practice among school boys and all others, including those in the military services. Roosevelt was encouraging government support for marksmanship. That support eventually led to the Civilian Marksmanship Program (CMP) and the National Matches.
The CMP, which was privatized in 1996, promotes marksmanship through firearms training, safety, competitions, and youth programs. It is a federally chartered 501c-3 corporation.

Ohio Farm Bureau tackles feral hogs, other topics at annual meeting

Delegates, 359 in all, from county farm bureaus in Ohio debated and discussed topics such as farmland preservation, artificial intelligence, solar power, and feral hogs at the Ohio Farm Bureau’s (OFB) 105th annual meeting.
There was a lot of talk about farmland preservation, how Ohio can continue to grow as a state, but doing it smartly while trying to preserve and protect farmland, said Jack Irvin, OFB’s vice president of public policy.

A Girl & A Gun: Women’s shooting league chapter makes strides in Oxford, Ohio

Consider that every gun is always loaded, know your target and what’s behind it, don’t point at anything you’re not willing to destroy, and finger off the trigger until the site is on the target.
There’s coffee, doughnuts, and laughter — a lot of laughter — at Mayday Gun Range in Oxford, Ohio. The A Girl and A Gun (AG & AG) meeting is in full swing. However, Scarlet Day, owner of Mayday, makes sure that safety is always front and center.

Otsego Schools to benefit from H2Ohio project

Frogs, snakes, and crayfish are already returning to the northwest Ohio wetland newly restored under the H2Ohio Initiative. They were probably well-camouflaged when the Ohio DNR (ODNR) joined the Black Swamp Conservancy and Otsego Local School District representatives for the ribbon-cutting ceremony in early October.
The project took 16 acres of previously farmed land and restored it to woodland and wetland habitat. The Otsego School will use the site for cross-curricular activities, and the school’s FFA program will use an onsite farm plot to demonstrate the value of using natural habitats to filter agricultural runoff.

Ohio’s Women Sharing the Outdoors celebrates with event

Women Sharing the Outdoors (WSO), a committee of the Mt. Healthy Izaak Walton League of America chapter, partnered with the Ohio DNR (ODNR) to teach women in a friendly, non-competitive setting, about their kind of local cuisine. The event was held recently at Cincinnati Parks’ Caldwell Nature Center.
In three stations, they would sample local wild game, discovering the flavor of pheasant, venison, and rabbit, all harvested by women, while learning about the history of the game animals and the nutrition of local game.
