It was around noon by the time we got started recently on Michigan’s Manistee River below Tippy Dam, which is a big change from the way Jim Romine and I used to fish.
We’ve always been on the water by sunrise. But this year Romine suggested we not kill ourselves getting up there, and I didn’t object.
Is that maturity or just old age?
We were fishing for Atlantic salmon, one of Jim Chamberlin’s favorite fish, on Michigan’s Torch Lake, one of his favorite fishing holes.
Atlantics, Chamberlin says, are “challenging, good fighting fish, extremely good to eat and they’re unique – Torch Lake is the only inland lake that has them.”
We were trolling, slowly, with shallow-diving Rapalas, 100 feet behind the planer boards in 15 to 50 feet of water, and rolling snake eyes. All the while, we could see the salmon – the water was so clear you see bottom 40 feet down.

Andrew Hendrickson is a charter boat skipper. He mostly fishes for walleyes, largely in the Michigan’s Saginaw Bay system.

Michigan’s 16,614-acre Barry State Game Area is set to expand by a little more than 200 acres thanks to a property donation that is expected to be accepted by Department of Natural Resources director M. Scott Bowen.
The property was formerly owned by the Boys and Girls Club of Kalamazoo and was purchased by a conservation-oriented family that works with the Southwest Michigan Land Conservancy, according to Mark Mills, the Michigan Department of Natural Resources’ Wildlife Division’s southwest regional manager.

Michigan Department of Natural Resources wildlife officials are not throwing up their hands and surrendering to the problems associated with deer management in Michigan; rather, they’re embarking on a new quest to get to the bottom of things.
“Right now, the discussion is going outside of the DNR,” said Chad Stewart, the DNR’s deer specialist. “Let’s get a group of people together who view deer management though diverse lenses. Let’s talk about what these challenges are and put our heads together and think about ways to improve deer management in the best interest of the deer resource.”

The discovery of a tuberculosis positive deer in Benzie County is not likely to affect antler point regulations (APRs) in the 13-county area of the northwest Lower Peninsula that requires bucks to have at least three antler points on one side.
According to DNR Deer Specialist Chad Stewart, the agency considers the TB-positive deer to be an outlier, and the DNR rarely reacts to a single animal found to have TB.
