New study shows fishing impact is huge and growing in New York’s Niagara County

New York’s Niagara County knows the impact that fishing and the outdoors have on the local economy. In 2009 and 2010, two separate economic impact studies were conducted through Niagara University.
A dozen years later, it was time to update the economic impact study. Capt. Frank Campbell, Outdoor Promotions Director with Destination Niagara USA worked closely with John Percy, president and CEO of Destination Niagara USA, to find a new company for the study. Young Strategies out of North Carolina was hired to perform the work. After a year of collecting data and collecting over 1,000 surveys in 2022, the results are finally in.

Leashed dog tracking organization in New York responds to criticism, prepares for upcoming season

Deer Search, a non-profit, volunteer organization dedicated to helping fellow hunters out by tracking injured big game, is receiving some unjust criticism and the group says it’s time to set the record straight.
Formed in the 1980s in the Empire State, the group worked with the state’s Department of Environmental Conservation to create a Leashed Tracking Dog license. The license authorizes a person to use a properly licensed trained dog to locate dead or wounded deer or bear. Remember that definition.

Better walleye fishing on New York’s lower Niagara River the result of a ‘long game’ regulation?

It’s been a good year walleye fishing in New York’s lower Niagara River. On a recent trip to Devil’s Hole (mid-September), the plan was to start out casting stickbaits for walleyes. I was with my brother-in-law, Tom Calvert of Lynchburg, Virginia, and Capt. Frank Campbell of Lewiston.
Calvert, originally from Niagara County, had never caught a walleye before. This was going to be a new experience for both of us. For me, I have trolled, drop-shotted, bottom-bounced, and jigged for walleyes. Never have I cast out stickbaits to target them before.

Fall Lake Ontario Counties derby nets Bridgeport, N.Y., angler $25K grand prize

In the Fall Lake Ontario Counties Trout and Salmon Derby held Aug. 18 to Sept. 4, Robert Karker, of Bridgeport, was the $25,000 Grand Prize winner after he reeled in a Chinook salmon that weighed 29 pounds, 13 ounces. He caught the king near Sandy Pond in the eastern basin of the lake on Aug. 29.
Karker was fishing with Mike Daley of Grand Island, Fla., and Jim Walsh, of Lakeport, aboard their 21-foot Starcraft Islander named “Fishin’ Impossible.” It was around 10 a.m., as they moved from deeper water to 103 feet, Karker walked over to the diver to check it out.

Belly up to the famed Niagara Bar in New York for big brown trout

Arthur O’Mara of Moravia, N.Y., was fishing the Niagara Bar for king salmon the first weekend of the Lake Ontario Counties Trout and Salmon Derby in August with his buddy, Jeff Smith, of Pennsylvania. As they worked their Spin Doctor and fly in 65 feet of water, the rod went off. They expected it to be a small king. Ten minutes later, they found it was a 12-pound, 11-ounce brown trout. Who would have thought? It was the new leader in the LOC Derby and as luck would have it, it became the eventual winner of the fall classic.

Alleged cheating disrupts another Lake Erie walleye event, this time in New York

It was déjà vu all over again for Lake Erie fishing contests when a team competing in the Bart’s Cove Duel, at Dunkirk, N.Y., allegedly attempted to slip one over on tournament officials and other teams when they tried to weigh in fish that had purposely been weight-enhanced by stuffing other fish, or fish portions, into the stomach of a walleye.
The tournament, held July 29-30, featured a total of 34 boats that braved the wind, waves, and even waterspouts on Lake Erie, to compete for cash prizes and some great trips.

Lake Ontario Counties Trout, Salmon, Walleye Derby in New York one for the ‘ages’

Walt Disney said, “laughter is timeless. Imagination has no age. Dreams are forever.”
Age doesn’t matter to 83-year-old Frank Antenori, of Peckville, Pa. He was doing some laughing, imagining what would happen if his big fish won the Grand Prize, and living a dream when he was fishing on Lake Ontario, July 22, out of Oswego, N.Y. Antenori was fishing in the Lake Ontario Counties (LOC) Trout, Salmon, and Walleye Derby (held July 1-30) and caught a 29-pound, 2-ounce king salmon to take over the lead for the $10,000 grand prize.

Fishing surprises are the best: Here are some favorites

I love surprises. As I slowly grow older, though, they seem to be coming less frequently. There is one exception – fishing!
Every time out, be it from shore or on a boat, there seems to be one surprise or another. They make me smile, every time. At the top of the list of “surprise” spots are the bodies of water that I have available to me in New York.

New York’s Reel Impact Tournament making a real impact for kids with cancer

August 4, 2023 was a special day on the lower Niagara River in New York. Not only was the fishing very good for nearly every person and boat involved (and the weather was perfect on the river), but it also raised some much-needed funds for kids with cancer through two very worthy not-for-profit organizations. If you were looking for a definition of win-win, this was it.
