Christine Thomas: Pancho and Lefty in the crosshairs

In anticipation of this year’s rifle deer season, Christine Thomas decided to spend an evening in her Portage County she-shed hunting stand in hopes of capturing some decent photos of deer. She was surprised at the results that evening. Just three of many photos she captured that night bring us an 11-pointer (left) dubbed Lefty, a nice 8-pointer (center), and a 7-pointer (right) that came within 15 feet of Thomas – close enough for her to capture his eyelashes and muzzle whiskers. (Photos by Christine Thomas)

“OK,” I texted our area Deer Report Group. “Country singers and subjects of country songs are our buck-naming themes for fall 2026. However, Willie Nelson is off-limits. We sure would not want to shoot Ol’ Willie.”
Readers know that the Little Cabin Crew and our neighbors on the Kranz farm share a text message group where we post photos from our trail cameras. I manage the thread on our side. Matt Kranz manages on their side. Matt’s son, Cameron, chose the theme.
