New vessel gives Michigan’s Great Lakes fisheries teams a tech tool

Michigan DNR fisheries researchers have a new tool for studying the Great Lakes after a 66-foot research vessel was delivered this summer to the agency’s Charlevoix Fisheries Research Station.
The newly-commissioned Steelhead, built by Moran Iron Works Inc. of Onaway, replaces a converted 62-foot, 6-inch commercial trawler of the same name that served the DNR for 58 years.

Minnesota DNR K9s help monitor zebra mussels in state waterways

The Minnesota DNR Division of Enforcement enlists the help of conservation K9s to detect zebra mussels, helping to keep state waters safe from the spread of this aquatic invasive species.
As of Sept. 9, based on the infested waters list, 398 lakes and wetlands have confirmed the presence of zebra mussels. The DNR also has 302 water bodies listed as infested with zebra mussels because they are closely connected to waterways where the species have been found.
