Gretchen Steele: The deer hunter’s annual September lie: ‘I’m ready’

Somewhere between the Fourth of July and the first cool September morning, somebody stole about six weeks from the calendar. I would like them returned immediately.
Because Illinois archery deer season is coming, and I am ready. Except I’m not. That was a lie. It is the same lie deer hunters across Illinois are telling spouses, hunting partners and, most enthusiastically, themselves.

Sportfishing group sounds alarm on tariffs

If U.S. anglers thought they were immune from the sniping via the U.S./Canadian trade war, they need a fresh slap in the face of Great Lakes water.
Mike Leonard, vice president of government affairs for the American Sportfishing Association (ASA), announced Aug. 25 that Canada has installed a “new round of retaliatory tariffs that will take effect at 12:01 a.m. on Sept. 8.”
“Of particular relevance to the sportfishing industry, Canada will impose a 50% tariff on U.S.-origin fishing rods classified under Canadian tariff item 9507.10.90, ‘Fishing rods: Other,’” Leonard said in a prepared statement.

C.B. Bylander: When your hunting dog’s last hunt comes too soon

When do you say goodbye to your hunting dog?
I’ve been thinking about that a lot lately because Storm, our 14-year-old black Lab, is not doing well. Sure, from a distance he looks good. His coat remains black as night. Up close, he looks good, too. His caramel-colored eyes are alert and searching. Sometimes they even talk to you.

Dan Ladd: Remembering cousin (little brother) Jimmy

Being the youngest of five kids, I grew up without a little brother or sister. Well, sort of. When I was very young, our family moved from a village neighborhood out to the country and to the long-time family-owned property where I live today. My Uncle Jim Ladd’s family was right next door and my siblings and I were always close, and still are, with our first cousins. One of them was Jimmy, who was just a few years younger than me.

The evolution of the shotshell spans 400 years of innovation

The shotgun shell is one of the most recognizable forms of ammunition in the world, but its development spans more than four centuries of innovation. From crude paper cartridges carried by soldiers in the 1600s to today’s highly engineered plastic shells, the evolution of the shotgun shell mirrors advances in firearms technology, chemistry, and manufacturing.
