Bill Hilts, Jr.: Be careful what you ask for… as New York’s Lake Erie water shines

Like the saying goes, be careful what you ask for – you just might get it.
Bass anglers in Western New York have been asking for another Bassmaster event in their treasured waters of Lake Erie to show the fishing world how special these waters are. Bass Anglers Sportsmen’s Society had not visited the area since an Elite Series tournament was held here in 2008.

How to beat the ‘eyes in the sky’ this waterfowl season

“They busted us,” said my cousin, who could not contain his incredulousness.
It was a perfect late-autumn morning in the marsh – crisp, clear, mildly windy, full of promise. The day couldn’t have started any better. We had scouted this smaller peanut-shaped wetland surrounded by picked corn the night before as hundreds of mallards piled into it near dusk. With few other options, we decided to set up there the following morning.

Muskies on the edge of fall; here’s how to catch them

Morning fog enveloped the lake as we looked down on it from the cabin’s window. Along the shoreline, gold and crimson leaves faded into the mist. The thermometer on the deck read 40 degrees.
Yesterday we’d fished in shorts and T-shirts, but this morning we’d be pulling on all the clothes we’d brought along. A cold front had hit like a sledgehammer, but in our minds conditions couldn’t have been better. Early fall – what some fishermen refer to as the preturnover period – is my favorite time for muskies.

Commentary: Hunters unhappy with New York’s Western Zone waterfowl hunting seasons

When the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation transitioned to a Structured Decision Making (SDM) computer modeling approach for selecting duck seasons in 2019, many waterfowlers prayed that Western Zone dates would remain close to previous years.
Instead, the new dates radically altered the season, essentially eliminating the entire month of November. Worse yet, these dates were locked in for five years.

Wisconsin Waterfowl Expo drew more families this year

Wisconsin Waterfowl Association’s (WWA) sixth annual Waterfowl Hunters’ Expo, that ran Aug. 21-22, was a big draw for families with husbands, wives, kids and their dogs roaming the grounds of the Sunnyview Expo Center.
Brad Heidel, WWA executive director, said that his wife, Karen, who helped with admissions, made the comment that she couldn’t believe how many families came through the gate. “It’s wonderful that there is so much for everyone to do here. It really is a family event,” she said.

To DEET or not to DEET? Let’s talk about bug dope

A few years back, when I was guiding college-age students into the Boundary Waters in Minnesota, I took a group to an outfitter’s store for last-minute supplies and to expose them to the vibe of canoe country, letting their excitement build.
At the check-out counter, the proprietor had stacked two or three varieties of natural insect repellent, labeled with “no artificial chemicals,” “nature’s natural,” “organic,” or “non-toxic,” in packages of shades of green. He knew his customers.

Dan Ladd: A front row seat to forward-facing sonar

Whenever the Bassmasters Elite Series comes to Plattsburgh, N.Y., I typically try to make it up there at least for a day. Covering the tournament allows me the opportunity to get new photos of the current competitors, and talking with B.A.S.S. Conservation Director Gene Gilliland is always at the top of my list.
It’s less than a two-hour drive for me and being that SUNY Plattsburgh is my college alma mater, well, it’s always nice to take a ride down Memory Lane.

Waupaca couple develops Hooked on Wisconsin Outdoors clothing line

She loves to fish. He loves to hunt.
A Waupaca husband and wife have turned those passions into a line of clothing inspired by the outdoors. Kyle Holden, an officer with the Waupaca Police Department, and Kelly Holden, an emergency department nurse in Plover, teamed up to start Hooked on Wisconsin Outdoors three years ago and displayed their threaded wares at one of more than 70 vendor booths at this year’s DeerFest, Aug. 14-16, at the Holiday Inn Convention Center in Stevens Point.
