Roadside survey finds Iowa pheasant population second highest in a decade

The Iowa Department of Natural Resources’ annual August statewide pheasant survey averaged 23 birds per route this year, which is the second highest count in more than a decade, behind only the 2025 survey. The DNR said Iowa pheasant hunters should expect to have a “pretty good season.”
“Weather likely played a role in the lower counts this year, but 23 birds per route is the second highest average since 2015,” said Todd Bogenschutz, upland game biologist with the Iowa DNR.

New York court rules in hunter/landowner liability case

A recent legal action decided by the Appellate Division of the Supreme Court of the State of New York for the Fourth Judicial Department, which hears matters arising in the western part of the state, demonstrated the importance of section 9-103 of the New York State General Obligations Law to landowners who allow hunting and other outdoor recreation on their property and, indirectly, to people who engage in outdoor recreation on private lands.
