Nature Smart: Rebounding pelicans

There are some birds that seem almost too improbable to be real.
The American white pelican (Pelecanus erythrorhynchos) is one of them. With a wingspan stretching nearly 9 feet and a bill that’s absurdly oversized, this is a bird that’s hard to mistake for anything else. Yet despite its enormous size, white pelicans fly with astonishing grace.

Walz signs order halting sulfide ore mining outside Minnesota’s Boundary Waters

Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz signed an executive order Tuesday directing state agencies to halt permitting and leasing for copper and nickel mining in the watershed that feeds the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness. His actions follow a close congressional vote this past spring that stripped long-standing federal protections from the region.

Not state records, but New York anglers catch summer trophies

Thus far in 2026, there have been no freshwater fishing records broken in New York State. But there’s still plenty of fishing time left in the season.
Meanwhile, there have been some notable catches across the state. On the morning of June 25, Zachary Blakeney, 17, of Avon, in Livingston County, got an early start.

Patrick Durkin: Sonar expert Rick Krueger solved Wisconsin’s 45-year mystery of two missing men

My dad’s oldest brother, Donnie, worked at Kellogg’s cereals in Battle Creek, Mich.
Each summer, he pulled his boat and its twin 50-hp Mercury engines 320 miles to a cabin he and Aunt Jeanie rented for two weeks on Lake Monona in Madison, Wis. That was the early 1960s, when rental cabins bordered the beach at Esther Park. Our family didn’t own a boat until 1968, so Uncle Donnie’s vacations offered us rare treats to waterski and fish from a boat. He especially liked fishing a rock pile just north of the cabin.

Wisconsin State Roundup: A list of verified wolf attacks and kills in the state

We talked about wolf kills on pets and livestock in this spot last issue, and the fact that the Wisconsin DNR fund that pays for those losses could run short.
I wonder if many readers know the DNR tracks wolf attacks on its website. Go to the “hunting” tab, click on “wolf” and you’ll see a tab that lists verified wolf kills and attacks, along with definitions for the three levels of “human safety” incidents. I’m going to list all of the attacks and kills verified by USDA-Wildlife Services since July 1. You might be surprised.
