Trump administration moves to end roadless rule on national forests

The U.S. Forest Service filed a proposed rule Tuesday to eliminate the 2001 Roadless Area Conservation Rule nationwide, a policy shift that would reopen nearly 45 million acres of national forest land to road construction and active management for the first time in a quarter century.
Outdoor groups immediately condemned the proposal as a threat to some of the country’s best hunting and fishing habitat.

Ralph Loos: Illinois record bass confusion? Just blame the flatheads

The tact I like to take in this job is to always assume I’m the dumbest guy in the room, and 10 times out of nine I’m pretty spot on about that. Illinois bass fans, Ed Walbel and folks in Pike County know where I’m headed with this. Because last time I penned this column, I wrote about the Illinois state record largemouth bass.

New York’s multi-use Deer Creek Marsh WMA provides access along Lake Ontario

Deer Creek Marsh Wildlife Management Area in Oswego County is one of those state-owned tracts that offer a lot more than just wildlife.
Sure, the 1,771-acre parcel is popular with hunters, especially with waterfowlers, given its proximity to Lake Ontario, as well as with pheasant hunters, since it receives several rounds of stocked birds from the state’s Reynolds Game Farm.
