Brown trout, bluegills are popular species at Devils Lake in Wisconsin’s Sauk County

Devils Lake and the bluffs surrounding the lake serve as the centerpiece for Devils Lake State Park, which sees more than 2.5 million visitors a year, making Devils Lake the most visited state park in Wisconsin.
Many of those visitors are fishermen who ply the depths of Devils Lake for bass, northern pike, panfish and trout. The trout are stocked since Devils Lake’s water quality allows the lake to maintain enough dissolved oxygen at depth to support a “two-story” fishery, with trout living in the colder depths.

Here’s a sentence I hoped I wouldn’t be writing this summer: crews just pulled several hundred baby silver carp out of the Marseilles Pool of the Illinois River — about 80 miles from Lake Michigan, and closer to the front door of the Great Lakes than these fish have any business being.
The catch came Aug. 14 during what the biologists politely call “routine intensive monitoring” of the upper river. The fish measured a modest 4 to 6 inches. It’s the first time invasive carp this small have shown up this far upriver since the monitoring program started keeping score back in 2010.

A few tips for making the most of Minnesota’s early teal season

The oppressive heat dome that has failed to budge over the last few weeks has not stifled me from planning fall hunts, especially waterfowl trips that are only four weeks away if you pursue early teal and geese. With the game dog and waterfowling expo Game Fair happening right now, excitement for these hunts is increasing exponentially.
While I specifically target teal in both Minnesota and South Dakota, I have never pursued the diminutive, feathered rockets during the so-called early teal season. Still, the tactics employed for opening weekend teal will apply perfectly to sports folks who hit the water for the brief teal season.

Wisconsin Waterfowl Hunters’ Expo bigger than ever; here’s what it’s all about

The sixth annual Waterfowl Hunters’ Expo is bringing the waterfowl hunting community back together at the Sunnyview Expo Center in Oshkosh, Wis., for two action-packed days dedicated entirely to ducks, geese, retriever dogs, gear, and the waterfowling lifestyle.
The expo will open Friday, Aug. 21, at noon and continue to 6 p.m. On Saturday, Aug. 22, the expo will run from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., with approximately 200 waterfowl hunting-related vendors expected to participate.
