It started with one conversation at a pint night.
The Minnesota chapter of Backcountry Hunters and Anglers (BHA-MN) regularly hosts gatherings around the state to connect with deer hunters about Minnesota’s deer herd and the impact of chronic wasting disease.
“A member said they wanted to clean up some long neglected public land near Grand Rapids and that led to a project,” said BHA-MN Chapter Chair Chance Adams. “We sent out an email inviting people and we had 20 people come out, including some kids and spouses, to spend a few hours on a Saturday picking up 1,500 pounds of trash, old shotgun shells, and spent ammunition.”
“There’s pike all around that shore over there. There’s weeds over there but the water is high and you can’t see them right now. But there’s thousands of pike over there.”
As his father sets up the boat, 7-year-old Wyatt Ellsworth tells me about all the fish he has caught in this lake. I normally wouldn’t trust a kid to tell me where the fish are, but it just so happens that I have caught a lot of pike on that shoreline – mostly hammer handles, but a few over 24 inches. And when it comes to fishing, Wyatt knows a thing or two.

I felt spurts of strange fatigue during the half-hour ride to the lake, but tried to chase them away with coffee. Once on the boat, the physical drain was increasingly overpowering.

As time goes by, one tends to talk more about physical ailments as well as old memories of times and places gone by. This is a fact. If you doubt it, hang on.
You, too, are aging because time goes by. And soon you’ll will be whining about arthritis or some other problem and you’ll also be telling anybody who will listen about that big muskie that got away umpteen years ago. This I know. So in the spirit of happiness, I shall refrain from complaining about body parts that no longer function as designed. Rather, I’m remembering better moments today.
