New regulations greeting Illinois hunters this fall
Illinois waterfowl hunters will see one of the most significant statewide changes this fall, but a handful of new rules are also in store for deer hunters.
Meanwhile, additional public hunting acreage is being added at two state natural areas.
The changes are outlined in DNR’s 2026-27 Illinois Digest of Hunting and Trapping Regulations, which is available online and at license vendors across the state. Here are some of the highlights.

Illinois ranks low in dove hunt success
Are Kentucky dove hunters much better shooters than Illinois dove hunters? By the same token, are Illinois dove hunters twice as good as those who do it up in Wisconsin?
If nothing else, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service provides dove hunters here a lot to ponder as the Sept. 1 season opener nears. A 2025 Mourning Dove Status Report by USFWS suggests that, among Illinois and five states that touch it, Kentucky stood out not only for its dove harvest but also for hunter success.

It’s the middle of August, and the time I begin shooting my bow in earnest. I try getting out at least four times a week and send at least a dozen arrows downrange to my bag target.
A torn rotator cuff, the doctors tell me, can’t be repaired prevents any more shooting than that, but for me at least that’s enough. Last week, after one of these shooting sessions, as I placed my bow back into the truck, I noticed that the string was frayed. I was guilty of not waxing my bowstring as often as I should have, and it showed.

Chairman Rob Bohmann shares thoughts with Wisconsin Conservation Congress delegates as he steps down
As Rob Bohmann stepped away from his chairmanship position of the Wisconsin Conservation Congress after logging a cumulative run of nine years in the harness, he looked around the convention hall and offered some thoughts to those who will follow him.
In his farewell speech, he thanked all 360 congress delegates from all 72 counties in 11 districts and urged them to focus on their shared love of the outdoors, not their differences.
