Michigan State University, DNR researchers to investigate ‘zombie’ fish in deepest depths of Lake Superior

Dangerously thin Siscowet lake trout populations have motivated the Michigan DNR and fish pathologists from Michigan State University to sink to the deepest point of Lake Superior to better investigate what is hampering the species.
Siscowets, a deep-water variant of the common lake trout, are uniquely adapted to the extreme depths of Lake Superior. They are typically characterized by a deep body, small head and an incredibly high body fat content.

The weird work of intercepting trafficked wildlife in Alaska

Chris Andrews was working the belt at the Anchorage airport last fall, watching international cargo arrive.
“An employee said, ‘Hey, this box stinks, Chris,’” Andrews recalled.
The box was labeled “car parts.” Other stinky boxes came down the belt. When opened, Andrews found they were filled with thousands of shark fins headed to Hong Kong.

Life Lessons: What the Boy Scouts taught me

Looking back on my childhood years, I remember my most fun times were playing in the outdoors. It did not matter if the outside temperature was 28 degree or 82 degrees F, I was happy outside in the fresh air, snow or sunshine.

Wisconsin Wardens at Work: Iowa County warden steps in to return wallet

It is common for Wisconsin DNR field wardens to work together with local, county, and state law enforcement agencies. Often one agency, particularly among wardens, have equipment that another agency may not have.
This situation was not an emergency, serious crime, nor accident, but one that shows how wardens might best handle something involving outdoors enthusiasts.

Gretchen Steele: June has become ‘the season between seasons’

I feel like the title above needs a qualifier. Like everything else this year, what I commonly associate with mid-June down here in the hills and hollers of southern Illinois has been happening early. Generally about two to three weeks early.
It’s confounding for someone like me, who has taught young people not to rely on a calendar but rather to listen to the woods and look around you.
