Sharpshooting program suspended by Illinois DNR after three counties added to CWD list

Three new counties have confirmed cases of CWD in deer, pushing the Illinois DNR to upend its unpopular sharpshooting program and once again refocus its approach to managing the expanding disease.
Effingham, Scott, and Stark join 25 other counties in the state with at least one confirmed case. More alarming, Effingham and Scott counties follow Adams County as having the first documented cases outside of the CWD “hot zone” – formally known as the  northern Illinois CWD endemic region.

89-year-old Michigan hunting and fishing group may shut doors soon

If Michigan United Conservation Clubs doesn’t raise $100,000 by May 1, “we will be forced to close our doors,” President Stephen Dey said in an email sent to members and supporters Monday.
According to Dey, it’s been a long time coming. “Over the last 20-plus years, we’ve been selling all of our major assets to operate on,” he told Bridge Michigan on Tuesday, April 21.

Push is on for Erie County to opt-in on New York’s pilot youth hunting program

Sportsmen and women from Erie County turned out in solid numbers on Wednesday, April 22, when the Erie County Legislature called a public hearing on a local county law that would allow 12- and 13-year-old junior hunters to pursue deer with a firearm while accompanied by a fully licensed adult, as part of the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation’s Pilot Junior Hunting program.
Jack Coad, president of the Erie County Federation of Sportsmen’s Clubs, had been urging sportsmen to attend the public hearing on this issue since April 16 when it was first announced.

Mike Raykovicz: Leased land a contributing factor to the decline in hunting license sales

I don’t know about you, but I’m getting excited about New York’s upcoming turkey season.
Things are getting harder, though. Like many others I know I’m feeling the pressure of being shut out of some great hunting spots. A few years back, I was politely told one of the Tioga County farms I hunted for years was now leased to a hunting club.
