Pennsylvania’s debate over Opening Day of the firearms deer season isn’t likely to die down anytime soon, and I guess I’m okay with that. At least it shows our continued passion for hunting and, while our numbers are dwindling, a strong legion who pursue whitetails every year.
Admittedly, I don’t have a dog in this fight. I’m retired, don’t have to head off to deer camp right after stuffing myself with turkey and stuffing, and consider Opening Day a grand tradition no matter which day it’s held.

Representatives from the Legislative Citizens Commission on Minnesota Resources testified before the House and Senate last week on their annual funding recommendations. No vote was taken during the March 3, House Environment and Natural Resources Finance and Policy meeting, but the language did pass the Senate Environment, Climate and Legacy committee meeting on March 5.
According to Rebecca Nash, LCCMR director, the commission received 400 proposals for 2026 amounting to approximately $359 million.

After another winter, anglers are chomping at the bit to fish open water again. With the cold we’ve had this season, ice is still covering some lakes across the Midwest, and may hold on for a while in North Country. Not to mention, walleye fishing is closed in many inland waters until May. Thankfully though, many of the river systems in the region are open – in terms of ice coverage and game fish seasons.

Ohio angler Ab Reed marks 49 years competing on bass tour
The strength of any organization depends on a solid foundation. For the Perry County Anglers in Ohio, that foundation is anchored by a member who will be competing for the 49th consecutive year when the season opens at Rocky Fork Lake on March 29.
“I joined the club in its second year because I didn’t know anything about it the first year,” said Ab Reed. “That was 1978, and I’ve fished the club every year since then.”

Do you use black jigs to mimic a leech? Should you use a leech pattern? Do you see leeches when you are out fishing, like you do crayfish, minnows, or shad? What is the deal?
Black or blue/black soft plastics are a staple for bass anglers in colder water, stained too. Why do such patterns work, when the common prey items do not resemble such an offering?
