Hundreds of visitors lined up early this week to witness a natural phenomenon that hadn’t been readily accessible for more than a decade.
Because ice and weather conditions along the shores of Lake Superior were deemed safe by the National Park Service, the public was able to hike out to the storied ice caves at the Apostle Islands National Lakeshore in northern Wisconsin. It was the first time since 2015 that the spectacular ice display was officially open for viewing. By Tuesday, Feb. 17, access to the caves temporarily ended as a strong winter storm approached the area.

A muskie captured by the Illinois DNR during a spring trap net survey turned out to be a good history lesson for fisheries biologists and anglers alike.
The 2024 sampling – the last recorded by DNR – featured six muskies that ranged from 35½ to 39.4 inches long and was composed of five males and one female. One of the males had been tagged by DNR.

U.S. Forest Service law enforcement officers at the Land Between the Lakes National Recreation Area wrapped up a poaching case which resulted in the seizure of an impressive buck mount.
The 14-point deer was taken illegally in the Land Between the Lakes area, which is located at Kentucky Lake and Lake Barkley – an area frequented by Illinois hunters and fishermen.
