Junior Hunter Gun, a new hunter training tool, inches closer to reality

A first-time hunter takes aim at a pheasant rising from the cornfield.

He unlocks the safety, presses his cheek against the butt of the gun and smoothly squeezes the trigger.
The sound of a shotgun blast rings in his ears, but no pellets are propelled skyward. Instead, a camera affixed to the barrel of the gun captures the performance of the young hunter and flashes a photo on a built-in video screen. A quick glance lets the youngster know if he hit or missed the target. This futuristic scene has been playing in Conner Couet’s head for months, but very soon his entrepreneurial spirit will help turn an idea into reality.

Metro’s Lake Riley gets Minnesota’s first-ever whole-lake copper treatment to combat zebra mussels

As Olivia Nyffeler stepped onto a boat along the shores of Minnesota’s roughly 300-acre Lake Riley, she clapped and raised her hands in celebration.
“All right,” she yelled, barely able to contain her enthusiasm. “Here we go!”
Nyffeler, a University of Minnesota Ph.D. student working with the Minnesota Aquatic Invasive Species Research Center (MAISRC), was heading out on the southwest Twin Cities metro lake to witness the first-ever, whole-lake application of copper sulfate in the battle against invasive zebra mussels.

Ice cave enthusiasts flock to Lake Superior’s Apostle Islands for first time since 2015

Hundreds of visitors lined up early this week to witness a natural phenomenon that hadn’t been readily accessible for more than a decade.
Because ice and weather conditions along the shores of Lake Superior were deemed safe by the National Park Service, the public was able to hike out to the storied ice caves at the Apostle Islands National Lakeshore in northern Wisconsin. It was the first time since 2015 that the spectacular ice display was officially open for viewing. By Tuesday, Feb. 17, access to the caves temporarily ended as a strong winter storm approached the area.
