Illinois pro Drew Gill lands two monster largemouths to open 2026 with big victory

Illinois pro angler Drew Gill landed an 8-pounder and a 9-pounder to kick off the 2026 Tackle Warehouse Pro Circuit the same way he kicked off the 2026 Bass Pro Tour season – with a win and a $100,000-plus payday.
Gill finished the 3-day tourney held on Lake Beauclair, part of the Harris Chain of Lakes in Leesburg, Florida, with 13 bass weighing 66 pounds, 4 ounces.

Avid southern Illinois outdoorsman on goose hunt dies trying to save dog

A 23-year-old goose hunter from southern Illinois died last month after he fell through the ice of a frozen pond while trying to save his dog.
The New Baden Fire Department responded to a report that a man fell through the ice of a frozen pond shortly after 3 p.m. Jan. 26. After several hours, a search by several emergency responders transitioned from a rescue to a recovery mission, and the man’s body was recovered the next day.

“I thought it might create some confusion,” Ellen offered, referring to the nomination of her grandsons for Outdoor News’ annual Best Buck Contest. “Both boys had a such a good day.”
