Country’s largest pure fishing show headed to Novi, Michigan

Hundreds of new fishing boats, the largest ice fishing display in the state, and a lineup of seminars by some of the best anglers in the world combine to make the 43rd annual Ultimate Fishing Show-Detroit one of the largest and best fishing shows in the country.
The show runs Jan. 8-11, at Suburban Collection Showplace, 46100 Grand River Avenue in Novi.

Report shows invasive sea lamprey abundance returning to pre-pandemic levels in Great Lakes

The annual Status of Sea Lamprey Control report for 2025 recently has been released by the Great Lakes Fishery Commission. The report highlights that adult sea lamprey abundances increased in Lake Superior but decreased in lakes Michigan, Huron, Erie, and Ontario.

Outdoor Observations: New law a boost for Michigan’s hunter safety program

Michigan’s hunter safety program received a huge boost just days before Christmas.
That’s when House Bill 4285, sponsored by Rep. Curt VanderWall (R-Ludington), was signed into law by Gov. Gretchen Whitmer. HB 4285 requires the Michigan Department of Education (MDE) and the Michigan Department of Natural Resources to work together to develop a firearms safety course for students in grades 6-12.

Though every trap I set each trapping season is positioned to catch one particular species of furbearer, sometimes I’m surprised.
If I set a trap for a raccoon, it’s likely to catch an opossum. When I set a trap for a coyote, occasionally, I’ll catch a fox. I’ve caught muskrats in beaver traps and mink in muskrat traps.
