Ohio’s young deer hunters experience good hunt during 2025 youth season

Nearly 10,000 Ohio deer hunters age 17 and under helped fill their family freezers with venison in late November.
During the Nov. 22 and Nov. 23, Ohio youth-only deer firearms hunting season, the state’s Division of Wildlife reported 9,759 whitetails as being taken. Last year, that figure was 10,436 animals.

Ohio Insider: A history lesson on the state’s gun deer season

I’m writing this column amidst the traditional gun week for deer in Ohio.
If you will allow, I thought it would be fun to look back on the origins of the Buckeye State’s gun season. I was reminded of all this recently after reading an old news story from The Dayton Daily News by late outdoor writer Jim Robey.

First-ever Congressional rollbacks of public land use now law

On December 11, President Donald Trump signed a series of Congressional resolutions into law that rolled back Resource Management Plans (RMPs) and RMP amendments for millions of acres of Bureau of Land Management lands in Alaska, North Dakota, Montana, and Wyoming.
It marks the first time Congress has exercised the Congressional Review Act – which empowers the legislative branch to rescind federal agency rules – on land use plans built and implemented by federal land management agencies like the BLM, the U.S. Forest Service, the National Park Service, and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.

Experience waterfowl hunting on Pennsylvania State Game Land 214

Pennsylvania is blessed with many forms of wild game and birds to hunt.
Waterfowl is often at the top of that list at this time of year in a few locales in this state. One of those areas is in the northwest portion of the commonwealth, which is the area where State Game Land 214 is located.

A quick chat with Backcountry Hunters and Anglers’ Ryan Callaghan

Ryan Callaghan is best known for being a content creator for MeatEater, a company that provides content related to hunting, fishing and conservation through its website, podcasts and other media.

Called “Cal” by many, he recently was named president and CEO of Missoula, Montana-based Backcountry Hunters and Anglers, a non-profit advocacy organization that works to conserve wild public lands, waters and wildlife in North America. We recently visited with Cal at his home near Bozeman, Montana.
