New York officials address future land purchases

A week after New York voters narrowly passed a controversial ballot proposal related to a land acquisition in the Adirondacks, the offices of both Gov. Kathy Hochul and New York Attorney General Letitia James announced the signing of a Memorandum of Agreement they state will streamline the process of acquiring future lands.

Troubles with Minnesota’s shrinking duck habitat have led to slow hunting, may require controversial solutions

Like many other Minnesota waterfowlers, I monitor several of the Midwest’s waterfowling social-media pages. This year, even more so than any other year I can recall, users are consistently bemoaning a lack of birds in their area.
As of this writing, I am right there with them. We just experienced a nice cold front replete with 20-degree temperatures and 20-mph northwest winds that normally would have ushered in a day or two of frantic shooting at new-arriving birds.

Inseparable: Minnesota’s Bill Berg and the sharptail connection

At age 85, Bill Berg’s conservation fire still burns white-hot.
The retired and respected wildlife research biologist from Knife River still has today a passion for wildlife, wildlife research, and wildlife management. That’s especially true for a game species he’s studied and describes as largely forgotten in Minnesota: the sharp-tailed grouse.

Weather variables greet opening day hunters in New York’s Southern Zone

Unlike 2024, which featured balmy conditions for New York’s annual mid-November regular season opening day in the Southern Zone for big game, 2025 was a different story, and an ever changing one.
Across the state – from Buffalo to the Hudson Valley – hunters reported a continually mixed weather pattern that featured rain, snow, sleet, wind and sunshine. The conditions kept deer and hunters alike on their toes.

Health challenge won’t stop this Wisconsin bear hunter

When Fort Atkinson resident Lisa Purucker was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis (MS) 13 years ago, it disrupted nearly every aspect of her life. She hasn’t let it stop her from checking off a variety of adventures on her bucket list, though.
She bagged her first black bear in Wisconsin’s Zone A near the town of Kennan on Sept. 3. She shot the bear with help from her devoted husband, George Purucker, and Dave Mabie’s crew and team of Plott hounds.

Wisconsin NRB, Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection hone in on multiple shared efforts

For the first time since 2004, the Wisconsin Natural Resources Board (NRB) held a joint meeting with the Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection (DATCP) Board, Nov. 13, for perspective on how the two agencies work together.
Board members and secretaries have come and gone since then, but the current secretaries, Dr. Karen Hyun of the DNR and Randy Romanski of DATCP, now lead each agency, which have overlapping responsibilities for natural resources.

Mike Schoonveld: Rearing ponds giving Great Lakes’ whitefish a chance

The last living passenger pigeon hatched in captivity in the Cincinnati Zoo. Her parents had been born in the wild and put in the zoo for noble reasons.
The thousands of passenger pigeons that formerly migrated over Cincinnati were no more. In fact, the species was on the road to extinction. The captive pigeons became the only way for anyone to see a live one. More importantly, it was hoped the offspring from captive, wild parents, would someday be able to reestablish wild flocks.
