Ohio Mixed Bag: Fisherman drowns off Edgewater

Cleveland — Rescue crews recovered the body of a 71-year-old man who fell into Lake Erie while fishing off the rocks behind Edgewater Yacht Club in late October, according to Cleveland 19 news (WOIO).

The man, identified as Tak Yun Wong, of Independence, fell off the rocks just after 6 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 28 at Edgewater Park.

Witnesses saw Wong struggling in the 4- to 6-foot waves, according to an account from the TV station.

Cleveland firefighters said Wong was deceased by the time they got to the scene, but they were unable to safely bring him to shore. Cleveland Metroparks police went back to Edgewater Park the next morning and recovered the body.

Cleveland firefighters, Cleveland EMS, and the U.S. Coast Guard all assisted.

Wildlife Art Exhibit Premieres

College Corner, Ohio — The Ohio DNR (ODNR) and Ohio Arts Council (OAC) will host a photography exhibit at Hueston Woods State Park Lodge and Conference Center highlighting a collection of 40 photographs of small wildlife. The photographer, Mitch Wiebell who lives on a farm near Cincinnati, titled the exhibit “Kleinfunde,” which means small finds in German.

The photos will be displayed throughout the lodge’s main lobby until Friday, Jan. 23, 2026.

This exhibit and artist talk is part the Ohio DNR’s Arts in the Parks collaboration with the Ohio Arts Council. The Arts in the Parks programs celebrate the interconnectedness of arts and nature, providing new ways for people to enjoy Ohio State Parks.

Beware Of Low Water Levels In Fall

Columbus — The Ohio DNR (ODNR) reminds boaters to be cautious of low water in lakes at this time of year. Low water levels can pose hazards to boaters – both novice and experienced alike.

Precipitation and evaporation together create seasonal cycles in lake levels. Indicators of low water include: caution signs posted at the lake, visible sand bars in the water, and/or exposed logs or other hazards.

If these signs are present, boaters should exercise extreme caution when deciding whether to launch their boat.

Deer Gun Begins Monday After Thanksgiving

Columbus — Although Ohio’s legion of bowhunters have been hunting the woods and fields for a couple of months now, the state’s gun hunters have yet to have their collective shot.

That will change on the Monday following Thanksgiving. This year’s deer firearms hunt will begin on Monday, Dec. 1 and run through Sunday, Dec. 7. An additional weekend of gun hunting will be available on Saturday, Dec. 20 and Sunday, Dec. 21.
