Steve Sarley: Readers share memories of old bait shops, fishing in Illinois

I knew I was going to hit a hot button when I brought up bait shops of the past. Everybody has great memories of shops that smelled like worms and minnows and were filled with racks full of the things that fishermen dream of.
I’m not just talking about kids. What fisherman couldn’t spend a minimum of an hour in a bait shop, just browsing? The stories started rolling in and here are a few that I hope you enjoy as much as I did.

Drivers warned to remember that whitetails are on the move often during early November

Drivers take note, it’s early November and deer are on the move.
While deer vehicle collisions occur throughout the year, deer movement increases during the breeding season, peaking around the first week of November. Combined with the crops coming out and shorter daylight hours, that adds up to more deer vehicle collisions.

Amid controversy, commission board gives final OK to stock Pennsylvania’s Freeman Run

The Pennsylvania Fish & Boat Commission board has given final approval to a controversial plan to stock and study a Class A Wild Trout Water in Potter County, despite opposition from former fisheries officials and others.
At their fall board meeting, the commissioners approved, by a vote of 8-2, an exemption that allows for the stocking of rainbow trout in Freeman Run, section 04. They also approved a change in fishing regulations on the three-mile stretch.

Taking time for a father-and-son fishin’ mission during a Minnesota fall

In all the times we’ve fished together, my son has lobbed untold thousands of questions. Only one has really stuck with me: “Dad, why don’t we ever catch any walleyes?”
“Because we don’t fish for them. We’re bass fishermen.”
He should know that by now. To borrow from that theme, while there were several hunting seasons open during Minnesota’s long MEA weekend, he and I went fishing instead.

Mast crop production is mixed across Pennsylvania this year

Oaks are having a moment in parts of Penns Woods, producing bumper crops of mast not seen in years.
In general, though, wildlife will find mixed yields of nuts, seeds, berries and fruits from various trees, with some reflecting impacts of pests, disease, and extremes in weather. Mast crops vary from year to year because cycles differ among species, and environmental conditions vary among regions and sites.

Steve McComas: How Mother Nature can fix Minnesota lakes

Minnesota’s lakes are resilient, but if pushed too hard, they will change, sometimes for the worse.
Mother Nature, another name for the complex web of natural processes, has a way of rebalancing lake ecosystems that get out of whack. I think we should give Mother Nature more attention in her role to improve lake water quality and lake-related issues.
