Minnesotans among those convicted of poaching in Wyoming

An eight-year investigation wrapped up in Sweetwater County in southern Wyoming on Sept. 26 when Sean Thomas, of Farson, Wyo., was sentenced on multiple wildlife charges, according to the Wyoming Game and Fish Department.
Among the agencies assisting in the investigation were game wardens from the Minnesota DNR and Wisconsin DNR.

Mille Lacs winter regulations could look similar to current rule

The Mille Lacs Fisheries Advisory Committee earlier this week met with Minnesota DNR officials to go over fall creel surveys and consider ideas for what the winter walleye and perch regulations could be.
Nothing official was decided yet, as the DNR still needs to meet with Ojibwe bands to discuss what winter walleye regulations and allowed state poundage could look like for the coming year.

Steelshad is a great fall transition bait (and beyond) for multiple species

Over the past four years, I have been fishing with the Steelshad in New York waters with remarkable success. This lure is versatile, and works well with various fishing methods to entice strikes from a wide range of fish species. The Steelshad comes in 1⁄4, 3⁄8, 1⁄2, and 3⁄4-ounce sizes with several color options.
As our water temperatures cool from the mid-sixties into the fifties, this bait excels at covering mid-depth flats of 12-foot or shallower while looking for active feeders.

Streams of Thought: A bowhunting drought ends; I’ll drink to that

Early this spring, Craig the architect and I embarked on a “bar project” for a variety of possibly poor reasons. First, Craig’s family had sold its lumber-yard business, and I figured he had time on his hands – along with skills I sorely lacked.
Second, as I purged excess items from my house, I came upon shelves of never-been-used wine and cocktail glass.

The reality of the whitetail rut? Put time on your side

It’s hard to argue with the general consensus among deer hunters that the rut is the best time of the season to be in the woods. There’s nothing quite like a frosty morning in early November when things could bust loose at any moment.
The rut is great, but it’s also very hit or miss. There is one thing you can do to increase your odds of tagging out.

Gretchen Steele: Tales from the ‘pop-up porch’

After a two-year hiatus, due to old age and decrepitude, my dearly beloved and I finally felt ready and physically able to hit the campgrounds again.
While our days of backpack camping in the wilderness are over, like everything else in life, camping is still possible when you are in your golden years or disabled. It just takes some adapting. We are firm believers in adjusting, adapting, and overcoming in our household.

Public comments show year-round bass season is largely supported by Minnesota anglers

After the Minnesota DNR’s public comment period about the continuous bass season regulation change closed on Thursday, Oct. 23, the agency began combing through the responses.
According to Shannon Fisher, DNR fisheries populations and regulations manager, the majority, 72% – 81 of the 113 respondents – support the change, while 23 folks – 20% of respondents – oppose the proposed change.
