Toll of EHD in Ohio’s southeast seen in harvest numbers during early bowhunting

In spite of above average temperatures across the state and a killer viral-induced disease in several southeast counties, archery deer hunters in Ohio in the early going still performed decently when compared to the 2024-2025 season.
For the archery season’s first week ending Sept. 30, hunters bagged 5,333 deer. That is 1,046 more than were shot during the 2024-2025 season’s first week when 4,287 animals were arrowed.

Western Minnesota conservation officer seeking info on swans poached in Pope County

A western Minnesota DNR conservation officer is seeking information regarding what appears to be the poaching of four trumpeter swans, the breasted-out carcasses of which were left in rural garbage containers in Leven Township in Pope County.
DNR Enforcement CO Andrew Ladzinski, who’s stationed in Glenwood, said he received a call on Monday, Oct. 7, from a rural resident along County Road 30. The resident stated that while in the process of standing up tipped-over containers at the end of his driveway, he discovered two black garbage bags inside – odd, because his garbage bags are white.

A little shotgun maintenance will improve your accuracy this hunting season

A few years after I began shooting semi-automatic shotguns in the 1990s, I started taking my boom sticks to a gunsmith during the period between when summer trap leagues ended and before the bird-hunting seasons commenced.
The idea came from a friend and fellow bird hunter who is far more attentive to firearms and firearms maintenance than I am.

Illinois DNR says, ‘never mind’: Trout stocking will take place at most sites before Oct. 18 season opener

Whims of Illinois’ weather have created a conundrum for DNR, resulting in flip-flops on its decision to stock trout for the fall season, which is set to open Oct. 18.
Last week, DNR announced that stocking of rainbow trout in most of the 60 lakes, rivers and streams designated to open for the season had delayed due to “warmer than normal temperatures. But on Wednesday, a cool snap meant things were changing — again.

Near-ideal conditions set up promising deer season in many parts of Minnesota

A year ago, wildlife officials with the Minnesota DNR were quick to caution that one mild winter might not move the needle in a big way when it comes to what deer hunters could expect to see during the state’s 2024 gun season.
Now, the question is what will a second straight year of similar weather conditions mean for the deer herd as hunters head to the woods for the firearms opener Nov. 8?
