How have crossbows impacted deer, turkeys in Minnesota after two seasons? DNR releases report

As required by the state Legislature after allowing all hunters to use crossbows to hunt deer and turkeys, the Minnesota DNR has compiled its crossbow report for the 2023 and ’24 seasons. The agency says data from those first two seasons suggest crossbows have not adversely impacted the two species.
“In the past, the archery harvest has been a negligible (number) of deer taken, so we’ve never really had to calculate,” said Joe Stangel, the DNR’s southern region wildlife manager.

Minnesota pheasant opener largely typical with crops, heat playing a part

For the first few hours of last Saturday’s pheasant opener in Minnesota, Mother Nature smiled upon the state’s 50,000 or so blaze-orange-clad upland hunters, many of whom waited patiently at state and federal public accesses for shooting time to commence.
The 9 a.m. start was cool and crisp across most of Minnesota’s primary pheasant range, with temperatures in the low 40s and light winds. By 11 a.m., however, the wind had increased substantially, with gusts nearing 30 mph, and the temperature soared to a balmy 70 degrees by early afternoon.

Wisconsin archery hunting legend Art LaHa reshaped the image of bowhunters

I first became aware of LaHa’s booklet when I interviewed his daughter, Connie Ghiloni, and LaHa’s friend and hunting companion, Marge Engel, in 2008 in the Vilas County town of Winchester while writing my book On the Hunt: The History of Deer Hunting in Wisconsin.

Austin Priest named ‘Officer of the Year’ as Illinois DNR honors CPOs

Illinois Conservation Police Officer Austin Priest has been named DNR’s “Officer of the Year” for his “relentless enforcement of conservation laws and impactful public outreach.”
The announcement of Priest’s honor came as DNR recognized several CPOs and civilians for service to the state. DNR Director Natalie Phelps Finnie noted CPOs’ efforts to save lives, protect wildlife, and foster community connections.
