Rare bird species arrive for birding group gathering in New York

The purple gallinule was a nice touch.
As birders from across New York flocked to Ithaca last month, the committee for this year’s New York State Ornithological Association conference had a lot of work to do – arrange speakers, book venues, coordinate volunteers for two dozen field trips. And they had a little extra help to send home some attendees with a lifelong memory.

Wisconsin hunter takes ‘bear of a lifetime’ in Rusk County

The right place at the right time.
That’s where Kim Penney found herself on a recent black bear hunt in Rusk County, Wis. The Waupaca resident shot a male bear Sept. 17 – her first bear – that tipped the scale at well over 500 pounds. Penney said she’s glad she passed on a much smaller bear earlier on the same trip.
