Ohio workshop details latest science related to the fishery, health of Lake Erie

About 30 Lake Erie charter captains and 15 outdoor and science writers gathered at Ohio State University’s Stone Laboratory on Gibraltar Island at Put-in-Bay recently for the annual Lake Erie research updates workshop.
Those in attendance were given the opportunity to hear from Ohio Division of Wildlife (ODW) fisheries biologists, Ohio Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and other researchers to make attendees more aware of ongoing and new projects.

Retired Michigan DNR leader receives national honor

Ron Olson, one of Michigan’s most passionate outdoor recreation and conservation advocates, earned another national accolade last month: the Honorable Cornelius Amory Pugsley Medal for Parks and Conservation.
Recently retired chief of the Michigan Department of Natural Resources Parks and Recreation Division, Olson received the prestigious Pugsley Medal during the American Academy for Park and Recreation Administration’s annual awards dinner.

Pennsylvania’s S.O.N.S. of Lake Erie group staying vigilant for anglers

Although steelhead reign in fall, walleyes and perch are Lake Erie’s prized native species, and their biggest boosters in Pennsylvania are a volunteer group that has been around for nearly half a century.
S.O.N.S. (Save Our Native Species) of Lake Erie has been pivotal in helping to develop what is today a $49 million recreational fishery through efforts to ensure public access, enhance aquatic habitat, operate hatcheries and build community.
