Dan Ladd: Drought conditions take a toll across New York

Back in the spring, when rains were washing out fishing trips and turkey hunts, I mentioned in this space that I wasn’t too complacent in terms of potential future drought conditions.
The indicator at that time was just how dry I noticed the soil to be while tilling my gardens, despite the amount of rain that had been falling throughout the region. Not to say, “I told you so,” but the spring reprieve from dry weather didn’t last long.

Maiden Lake’s fishery includes walleyes, smallies and ’gills for Wisconsin’s Oconto County anglers

Anglers have plenty of reasons for dropping a line in northern Oconto County, with Maiden Lake near Lakewood being one of those reasons. Maiden’s fishery includes walleyes, smallmouth bass, largemouth bass, and bluegills.

Nature Smart: Cool Conehead Katydids

I enjoy late summer evenings. Not for the warmth but rather for the sounds that fill the night air.

Backyard and Beyond: Bears enjoying the water

This is the season when black bears gorge themselves on wild foods (and anything else they can find) to put on fat to carry them through their long winter sleep. Three recent photos sent by readers show that they also have an affinity for water. In each case, a trail camera caught the action near a water feature.

Junior big game hunt runs Oct. 11-13 in New York; here’s what to know

Another youth big game hunting weekend is about to take place in New York, as Columbus Day weekend, Oct. 11-13, marks the annual hunt for junior hunters ages 12-15.
During what is labeled a “firearms” hunt, junior hunters may use a rifle, shotgun, or muzzleloading firearm under the supervision of an experienced adult mentor with a NYS hunting license. They and their mentors must follow the state’s hunter orange/pink laws and cannot hunt from treestands.
