Steve Carney: Considerations for early duck hunting in Minnesota

I’m optimistic about Minnesota’s upcoming waterfowl opener, Sept. 27. The duck situation, numbers-wise, seems similar to last season, which was, in my opinion, a mediocre season at best. Most noticeable was the lack of wood ducks and teal.
Here are my thoughts as we head into the first week of the duck season.

Conservation Reserve Program now at ‘full strength’ for 2025

Pheasants Forever and Quail Forever on Sept. 17 announced that the U.S. Department of Agriculture had accepted 1.78 million acres into the Conservation Reserve Program in 2025.
The announcement by USDA’s Farm Service Agency, which includes general, continuous, and grassland enrollments, will help bolster agriculture, wildlife habitat, hunting opportunities, and rural communities throughout the upland range and beyond.

Minnesota, federal agencies using wasps to slow emerald ash borer

This September, the Minnesota DNR, Minnesota Department of Agriculture, and the U.S. Forest Service will complete a joint biological control effort to slow the spread of emerald ash borer (an invasive beetle from Asia) in the Chippewa National Forest. The effort, known as the parasitoid wasp program, involves the release of three species of non-stinging wasps to target EAB at different life stages, helping slow EAB without harming other species.

Plenty of water means scouting will be key to success for Minnesota waterfowlers on opener

At 82 years young, Jerry Christopherson, of Heron Lake in far southwest Minnesota, knows his way around a duck blind.
Aside from a four-year U.S. Army stint beginning in 1961, Christopherson, who started hunting ducks as a young boy, hasn’t missed a Minnesota duck opener.
“I have a few aches and pains, but I can still get around pretty good, and I’ll be out there with my son and grandson – three generations of us – Saturday morning.”

A judge’s first-hand account from the 2025 federal waterfowl stamp contest

I’m pretty good at spotting spam email, so in April when I got a note from “Kayt” at the “Federal Duck Stamp Office,” I had my suspicions. The email said cryptically, “Was hoping to talk to you if you have a moment.”
I searched for the sender’s name on the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service website and actually found it. Satisfied my cyber-self was safe, I returned the call.
“Would you be interested in being a judge for the 2025 Federal Duck Stamp Contest?” Kayt asked.
