Bass, panfish in Minnesota’s Big Carnelian Lake solid if not spectacular

Sometimes, the name of a lake can be deceiving. Such is the case with Washington County’s Big Carnelian Lake. At just 457 acres, this fishery just north of Stillwater is anything but “big.”
But with water clarity that’s typically between 12 and 20 feet, it’s one of the east Twin Cities metro area’s clearest bodies of water. This allows Big Carnelian to grow lush stands of shallow and deep vegetation, which provide ideal habitat for its largemouth bass and panfish.

Pomme De Terre River priorities drive Grant County, Minn., erosion fix

Situated a half mile from the Pomme de Terre River, one of the largest erosion-control projects in Grant County resulted in the installation of 19 water- and sediment-control basins to help keep topsoil in the fields and pollution out of the nutrient-impaired river and Perkins Lake, downstream in Stevens County, Minn.
Cooperating landowners and two rounds of Watershed-Based Implementation Funding from the Minnesota Board of Water and Soil Resources made the $360,000 project possible.

Steve Carney: Big change, as shallow fish bite in Minnesota waters heads to depths

Wow, how things have changed with fishing in Minnesota! A shallow bite that’s been on fire since early May has finally ended. A recent two days on the water convinced me to head to deep water and find a new pattern.
At this time of September, game fish are transitioning to new haunts as food sources change and water temperatures creep downward.

Interior wants to nix rule that made conservation a ‘use’ of public lands

Interior Secretary Doug Burgum on Sept. 10 proposed canceling a public land-management rule that put conservation on equal footing with development, as President Donald Trump’s administration seeks to open more taxpayer-owned tracts to drilling, logging, mining, and grazing.
The rule was a key part of efforts under former President Joe Biden to refocus the Interior Department’s Bureau of Land Management, which oversees about 10% of land in the United States.

Minnesota Mixed Bag: DNR asks upland bird hunters to voluntarily log hunting activities

The Minnesota DNR is inviting upland bird hunters to voluntarily log details about their hunts for grouse, woodcock, pheasants, prairie chickens, and partridge.
“We’re working with bird hunters to improve our understanding of what they see in the field,” said Nate Huck, migratory gamebird consultant. “Their information will complement our existing monitoring efforts.”
