How Minnesota’s forested acres – on Wildlife Management Areas and in state forests, alike – are managed for timber harvest matters.
Few know that better than Tim Quincer who, on Sept. 9, retired as a DNR Fish and Wildlife Division forest wildlife coordinator. It’s a position he’d held since 1999, and just part of his 38-year career with the agency. It’s a unique position, determining what’s best for wildlife amid pressures to turn trees into “green” for the state.
As we head into fall, it’s easy to get caught up spot-hopping, especially when you’ve got your graph lit up with bait and you know fish are biting somewhere.
Just a reminder: Don’t leave active fish for fish. If you’ve marked them and had a bite, stay put and work the spot. Fall walleyes can get moody, and it’s usually not about whether they’re there but what they will eat.

Archery deer hunting began last weekend – just in time for a September warmup that included temperatures that soared to around 90 degrees in southern parts of Minnesota, and lingered in the 80s for much of the rest of the state. Those temperatures held deep into the work week.
That, as would be expected, wasn’t a recipe for successful deer harvest, or a mad rush to deer stands on Saturday and Sunday.

If you spotted an old recurve bow with a twisted limb in your father’s closet, you might think he’d be lucky to sell it for $5 at a garage sale. But Charlie Klassa, 43, of Berlin, Wis., wouldn’t sell his dad’s old recurve for a bar of gold.
He’s a serious bowhunter and knows the bow he’s looking at; a 1968 Staghorn Tempest Zebrawood Deluxe. His dad, Bob Klassa, age 78, bought it after surviving Vietnam. That alone made the bow special.

Illinois waterfowlers got their first taste of a new duck season earlier this month with the brief teal season that ran Sept. 6-14.
Reports from hunters indicate there were plenty of opportunities to shoot blue-winged teal along the Mississippi and Illinois rivers, with a few green-winged teal also present the first two weeks of the month. Evidence from waterfowl watchers, however, were pointing to a slow start for teal.
