New bird migration model melds GPS, citizen science

Birds of a feather flock together, often traveling over enormous distances that can cross international borders. This can make managing and conserving critical populations of migratory birds extremely difficult, according to scientists at Penn State leading a team working to improve the understanding of migration movement at regional, continental and global scales.
The team recently received a $848,000 grant from the U.S. National Science Foundation to support their work, which focuses on integrating two tracking methods into one powerful tool called an Integrated Movement Model.

Notes off a soiled cuff: Cases of EHD confirmed in western Pennsylvania

We heard from several readers in western Pennsylvania who reported coming across dead deer in August. One blamed their deaths on EHD (epizootic hemorrhagic disease) and the other – an old farmer – said they died from bluetongue. I wondered if they are the same.
Turns out, EHD and bluetongue are caused by genetically related, but distinct, viruses transmitted to deer by biting midges, both causing similar symptoms like weakness, fever and swelling, often with blood-tinged mucus.

Commentary: Examining the three separate ‘lakes’ that make up Lake Erie

On Aug. 4-5, I spent about 22 hours in Dunkirk, New York, at the invitation of the Eastern Lake Erie Charter Boat Association (ELECBA) and the Chautauqua County Convention and Visitors Bureau (CVB) to get acquainted with fishing opportunities on the “deep end” of Lake Erie.
While it takes me five hours to drive there from my home near Bowling Green, those who live in some parts of Ohio could get there in much less time. It was not my first time there, but this time I took note of the similarities and differences between this unfamiliar Eastern Basin of Lake Erie and the Western Basin.

Lake Carnegie volunteers keep urban angling active in Pittsburgh

September is catfish month at tiny Lake Carnegie in Highland Park.
It’s an opportunity for anglers to learn how to target channel catfish, and the season finale for the Pittsburgh Anglers Fishing Club, now wrapping up a summer of outreach to urban youths. Retiree Ed Caldwell, 70, started the club to introduce kids ages 5 to 15 to the outdoors close to home, and to guide them in developing life skills through fishing.
