When state legislators earlier this year approved the elimination of Minnesota’s “slug zone” for deer hunting, it appeared debate was closed regarding an issue that had reared its head during the past several sessions. Firearms deer hunters in that zone, which includes most of the southern portion of the state, would be allowed to use rifles for deer hunting beginning with the 2026 season.
But there was a caveat, and it’s proved to be a reason that intense discussions about the shotgun zone are far from over: Individual county boards, per the legislation, may choose to “opt out,” thereby retaining a shotgun-only zone.
For the fourth year in a row, the number of black bears in Vermont far outpaced what the state considers an ideal population size.
Last year, the state had an estimated 6,800 to 8,000 bears, nearly double the objective of 3,500 to 5,500 bears, outlined by a Vermont Fish and Wildlife Department population model. The state calculates its goal for Vermont’s bear population based on a range of variables, including what is healthy for the bears and ecosystem, as well as humans’ attitudes toward the risk of conflict with the animals.
“Poach and Pay,” an ongoing research project commissioned by the Boone and Crockett Club, suggests that only about 4% of poaching incidents across the U.S. are uncovered or reported.
In other words, 95% of crimes involving hunting and wildlife are ever brought to light. Criminologists refer to undetected crimes as the “Dark Figure,” and in the case of poaching, the lost fines and costs related to replacing wildlife is put at $1.4 billion each year.
