Wisconsin’s Brett Leable spreading word on free-dive fish spearing

“I always say if you like to hunt, and you like to fish, you will love spearfishing,” Brett Leable said. “It’s basically hunting while underwater.”
Leable, a member of the National Freshwater Spearfishing Association (NFSA) Board of Directors, spreads the gospel of spearfishing wherever he goes, saying it offers fun for people of all ages and skill levels. He hopes that by raising awareness and attracting new spearers, old tensions will fade into history and those who prefer coming face–to–face with their quarry can be more fully embraced by the sporting community.

A day of sampling fish on the Mississippi River is an eye-opening experience

Fish smells gone wild and the baking August sun suddenly vanished when the unmistakable bill of a paddlefish surprisingly and seductively began bobbing up and down along the surface of Mississippi River Pool 20.
The fish’s body was unseen, but one thing was clear to fans of fish: the star of the show had taken the stage. By pure instinct, and with efficient zeal that had apparently rubbed off from the small team of professionals working at my side, I flung a dip net in the general direction, aware I had two seconds – maybe three – to capture the paddlefish before it swam off.

A 2025 grouse tour? Minnesota has more options than you might realize

For more than a decade, my brother and I and sometimes others have annually embarked on our “Grouse Tour.” Sometimes we’re on the hunt for ruffed grouse, sometimes not. Most of the time, two or more species are on the menu, and in new-to-us territories.
Because northeastern Minnesota gets plenty of attention, we tend to gravitate to locations elsewhere. Here are a handful of in-state grouse-hunting destinations that might be new to you as well. Any one of them could provide several days of hunting.

With concerns over Federal money, Wisconsin DNR budget remains a mystery

The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (DNR) 2025-27 budget is enough to keep current operations running, but without major additions.
Maggie Hutter, DNR budget director, reported to the Natural Resources Board (NRB) Aug. 13 that in the new budget the DNR lost 20 full-time equivalent positions, which had been vacant in the Environmental Management Division. In the previous state budget the DNR lost 40 positions, and compared to the DNR budget back in 2003 the DNR now has 500 fewer staff positions.

Sub-gauges for upland game? Here’s what to consider

Sub-gauges, are they viable choices for upland game or just a commercial gimmick? Using one has become more of a reality with advances in powder, shot, wads, and loading techniques.
Concerted efforts have increased the odds for the smaller gauges. Each one, the 20-, the 28-, and even the .410 bore, can be effective, within limits.
