Minnesota’s Sugar Lake has muskies, but anglers are sweet on its crappies

Wright County’s Sugar Lake was designated for muskie management in 1967. That original introduction of the species has provided decades of solid muskie-fishing opportunities, not to mention the fact that Sugar is the only lake in the immediate area that has muskies in it.
But before we dive into the current status of Sugar’s muskie population, it would be wrong not to first look at Sugar’s lengthy history of crappie production, which continues today.

Meet the top dogs from Minnesota’s 2025 Game Fair

The 44th annual Game Fair, held over two weekends (Aug. 8-10 and Aug. 15-17 in Ramsey) saw thousands of dogs enter the front gate and walk the grounds of Game Fair in Ramsey, Minn.
Many of those dogs and their owners participated in the various dog events, including the five championship-qualifying games: the scurry, goose hunt, obstacle course, and long jump (small dog and large dog). Daily winners took home a big bag of Eukanuba dog food and returned the final Sunday for the championships.

Here are some tips regarding usage of the drop-shot rig.

For Minnesota’s Lake Alice, a drawdown gone awry

The DNR reported Aug. 12 that Lake Alice, located in William O’Brien State Park, experienced a near total water level drawdown due to a mechanical issue with a valve in the 65-year-old water-control structure that regulates its discharge to the St. Croix River.
Minnesota DNR staff are currently assessing the structure to identify options and a timeline to address the problem. The DNR will share further information when it becomes available.
