A look at ever-changing record fish being caught in Illinois

Many things have changed over the last 100 years regarding fishing in Illinois. Thanks to 75 years of the Federal Aid in Sportfish Restoration Program and the work of fisheries biologists working throughout Illinois, fishing prospects are better than ever in our rivers, streams, lakes, and ponds.
So much so that state record fish are still being caught today, even though the record fish program has been operating for many decades.

Apostles’ Outer Island lake trout cooperating this summer on Lake Superior

Active lake trout have been rewarding fishermen this summer who are willing to run the more than 20 miles from Bayfield, Wis., to the Outer Island area of the Apostle Islands archipelago.
Not all fishermen have the type of boats needed to make that run safely. Those who don’t, but still want to catch lake trout, can hire a charter captain to get out there. Dave Schulz, of Iron River, is a retired DNR forester and former superintendent of the Brule River State Forest. Schulz also happens to be a licensed charter captain who loves fishing and introducing people to Lake Superior.

Mussel search in Will County, Ill., aids stocking in DuPage County waterways

On a sultry summer day in early July, four forest preserve employees strapped on chest-high waders and gingerly stepped into Spring Creek to search for female mussels that could be pregnant this fall.
They kneeled in the creek and methodically ran their hands through the mud searching for something hard. Sometimes they found rocks, other times, mussels. After the foray was finished, the group netted more than a dozen mussels of several different species.

Dassow family’s efforts in east-central Illinois earn 2025 Pheasants Forever ‘National Farmer of the Year’ honor

So far, 2025 has been a big year for habitat restoration for the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service Partners for Wildlife program in Illinois. This program, known as the “Partners Program,” specializes in collaborating with diverse partners across the state to restore prairies and wetlands.
In the heart of this focus area, one family farm in the state has been dedicated to restoring native prairie and wetlands for over 40 years. Duane Dassow, of Dassow Family Farms, began this undertaking in the early 1980s. More recently, his son, John, has continued their legacy on their farms and neighboring farms across multiple counties.
