Patience is a virtue in the squirrel game

Come September, I wanted to go hunting more than anything else. Getting a license at age 10, I hunted every week. Squirrel season opened first, and lasted until the other big event in my young life, opening day of rabbit and pheasant season.
Squirrels were scarce within walking distance of the house. No problem, I headed out with my prized possession, a decrepit $2 yard sale .22.

Wisconsin wealthy in county, state, national forests

Trees may be just greenery as part of the scenery to some people, but Ron Weber extols the values of forests for recreation, wildlife habitat, watershed protection and economic opportunities any chance he gets.
Weber works as a forester for the Wisconsin DNR in Ladysmith. He explained some of the functions of Wisconsin’s public forests to the 49th annual meeting of the Wisconsin Outdoor Communicators Association at Trees For Tomorrow in Eagle River Aug. 2. And, besides the economic and wildlife benefits, Weber said, forests are just a cool place to visit.

A quick chat with NRA president Bill Bachenberg

On April 28, at its 154th annual meeting, the board of directors of the National Rifle Association of America elected Bill Bachenberg of Pennsylvania as president.

In accepting the position, Bachenberg said, “We are at a pivotal point in our association’s history as we work to reach new members, re-build the trust of existing members, and provide the gold-standard programs that American gun owners expect.”
Outdoor News asked Bachenberg what paths led to him being entrusted with the keys to such an important group.

Try using subtle baits boldly for late-summer bass

Among my fondest fishing memories are late summer days catching bass on some of Pennsylvania’s clearest waters. Keystone Power Dam and East Branch Dam are still bodies that come to mind, along with flows such as the Juniata, Kiskiminestas, and Conemaugh rivers.
These waters have been for many years and remain my summertime amusement parks. Yet, their clear waters presents quite a conundrum for anglers.
