Notes off a soiled cuff: Controversy over deer hunting’s opening day still looms in Pennsylvania

With the lifting of the ban on Sunday hunting, the Pennsylvania Game Commission arranging 13 consecutive Sundays for hunting this fall and the adoption of weekend hunting, I bet most readers expected a respite from controversy surrounding the deer seasons.
And they’re probably right. But there is one piece of perhaps unfinished business – a bill to change the opening of deer season that likely will die in committee.

Bob Watson’s attention to detail, perseverance aids success of Pheasants Forever in Michigan

Thanks to their army of boots-on-the-ground volunteers, habitat improvement organizations like Pheasants Forever have made strides in increasing Michigan’s pheasant populations.
Behind every warm season grass mix that’s planted there is someone working quietly in the background to manage the funds used to purchase the correct quantity of seeds, coordinate their delivery to the right location on the right date, ensure that the required equipment is available, and schedule skilled volunteers. For good or bad, few sing the praises of these unsung heroes of conservation. One such hero is Bob Watson.

Outdoor Insights: Update on muskie study from Minnesota’s Leech Lake, and a salute to Brown County PF

At the MN-Fish board meeting last Thursday, Aug. 7, Bemidji State grad student Baylor Short presented an update on the Leech Lake muskie study, which kicked off in May.
The research began in response to concerns about the growing angling pressure on the 112,000-acre lake’s important muskie resource, particularly in the era of forward-facing sonar. Sponsors of the three-year study include the DNR, MN-Fish, Bemidji State, and the Leech Lake Band.

Ohio State football coach, Brian Hartline, keynotes outdoorsmen’s fair event

Sportsmen and women from across Ohio once again traveled to the Ohio State Fair to attend a “Sportsmen’s Summer Celebration” at the ODNR Natural Resources Park in late July.
The ODNR Division of Wildlife hosted the event as a celebration of the partnership between conservation organizations, sportsmen clubs, and supporters. Many were anxious to hear from the keynote speaker, Brian Hartline, former Ohio State University and NFL football player who is currently the offensive coordinator and wide receiver coach for the national title winning Buckeyes.

Fly fishing the ant drop: Be ready for the best river smallmouth action

When I picked up the flailing smallmouth and looked down its throat to remove my fly, the bass appeared to have swallowed a can of black pepper.
Its boney lips, mouth and gullet were encrusted with tiny black flecks – only it wasn’t pepper, it was ants: dozens and dozens of winged and wingless ants, size 16 by fly-fishing measurements, and the insects were packed together like a pearl pudding.
