Video: Scouting for whitetails after storm alters years of intel

This summer has featured some destructive storms in parts of the Upper Midwest.
Eric Morken has bowhunted a river-bottom system for whitetails for seven years and spends a weekend scouting out there in August each year. This past weekend on that annual scouting/camping trip, he quickly realized a storm that came through in June had completely altered most of his favorite locations.

Good season expected for New York bear hunters with opener looming

Some big game seasons begin quite early in New York. Among them is the early black bear hunting season that runs from Sept. 6-21 in a limited number of southeastern New York Wildlife Management Units. These are located in Regions 3 and 4, near the Pennsylvania and New Jersey state lines, in New York’s Southern Zone.
New York’s sporting license year begins Sept. 1, and although a Canada goose season opens on that date, along with the small game season for gray squirrel, big game species remain at the forefront for hunters as well as the focus for the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation.

Minnesota DNR sues Kittson County sheriff for issuance of elk permit

The Minnesota DNR filed a lawsuit on Thursday, August 7 against both the Kittson County Sheriff’s Department and Kittson County Sheriff Matt Vig for illegally issuing an elk tag to a farmer who shot an elk in that northwestern Minnesota county in late January 2025, according to the lawsuit.
The lawsuit is more of a formal declaration that the department and sheriff, as the DNR claims, overstepped its legal ability and authority to issue any kind of permit or possession tag for an elk.

Wild ricing in Minnesota predicted to easily best last year’s crop

Reports from around Minnesota indicate the wild rice crop is greatly improved over last year’s desolate production and poor ricing season.
“[It’s] definitely better than last year – not that that was hard, considering how dismal last year was. But good news: [It’s] also better than I thought,” said Ann Geisen, a DNR wildlife lake specialist.
