Outdoor News Junior Pro Team members find success in New York’s woods and waters

Nathan Martin IV and Gunnar Morris live on nearly opposite sides of New York state, and while Nathan is a relatively new sportsman, Gunnar is already an accomplished angler.
But they also have a lot in common. Both are members of the Outdoor News Junior Pro Team, and both achieved noteworthy outdoor accomplishments this year.

Minnesota’s LCCMR OKs 109 natural resources projects for $103 million in 2026

With around 400 applicants seeking funding from the Legislative-Citizen Commission on Natural Resources this year, only 109 are making the cut for a package of projects that will go before the Legislature in 2026.
“It was really heavy lifting for all the members, especially the legislators” and LCCMR staff to sift through almost double the number of proposals the commission receives, according to LCCMR co-chair Rita Albrecht.

Faster and smarter: New crossbows for 2025

One of the biggest complaints that crossbow shooters always have had was having to fire the bolt to unload it, unless you owned one of the few models that had de-cocking gizmos, built right in.
For 2025, almost every manufacturer has a model that can be cocked or de-cocked, without having to risk blowing out a shoulder. That’s a major upgrade for rank-and-file horizontal bow users as autumn approaches.

Steve Piatt: The trico — a tiny mayfly that’s a big deal for fly fishers

If all goes as planned, and it usually does with the trico hatch, expect some superb fly fishing on several Northeast trout waters in the coming weeks – maybe even right now.
And don’t be intimidated by the prospect of fishing a size 22 dry fly (and sometimes smaller). You can do it. In fact, the hardest thing about it will be tying the tiny fly on the end of your tippet. After that, the rest is fairly easy.

Skunks surprise trappers at fur auction

If you are a trapper in Illinois or basically the entire Midwest, the last couple of years is not what you want to see in the wild fur industry.
The collapse of the coyote market in 2021, followed by the rapid rise and equally sharp drop in the beaver market, leaves trappers without a viable wild fur market – at least nothing of a lot of consequence. Since the dismal results of the June 17-19 Fur Harvesters Auction, little has changed over the summer. But the big surprise of this year’s auction was skunks.

New York’s Sturgeon Point Marina to improve access for the disabled on Lake Erie

Western New York Walleye, a progressive-thinking walleye club focused on Lake Erie, made a media announcement at its July meeting that was held at the Sturgeon Point Marina facilities in Derby in the Town of Evans, in Erie County.
According to club President Ron Kucinski, the fishing organization will be teaming with the Town of Evans and Wheelchairs and Walleyes, a non-profit foundation from North Dakota, to install an inclusive wheelchair ramp and disabled person’s lift on the Sturgeon Point Marina property.

Christine Thomas: Kayak, camera and loons offer adventure on Wisconsin’s Spider Lake

“HO HO HO!” texted Tom Dew.
“Merry Christmas,” I texted back.
In mid-July we headed to Hayward, Wis., for our annual visit at the Dew Drop Inn. Tom and Kris Dew have been in this column on several occasions. We met through the Boone and Crockett Club and have gone on to collaborate on several conservation projects over the years.
